Has anyone been to Odessa? I would like to go there. It features in 'The Hare with Amber Eyes' and I just would like to go and take a look. If anyone has been there any recs for a half decent hotel?
Second point, how about Samoa. Any recs for a hotel there? I would like to go and see the tomb of RLS so I need only a couple or three nights there.

No. But I once looked at it as I could have flown there quite simply on some of my accrued Air-miles that I had to use-or-lose anyway, and I thought it might be somewhere different. I considered Tirana, Albania at the same time. But I never made it and I can't say I regret it; I wouldn't go to either now [20yrs later]. But if you want specific local advice look at Wikitravel, that'll give you a 360. Meanwhile I find the Baltic states more accessible, broadly very nice, and less crime prone...
Samoa? Hell of a long way to go for 2-3 nights! We were c500 miles away at Beqa Island off Fiji last year, great fun, but a helll of a long journey. Expect to be completely wiped out for Day-1, well unless under say 25YO perhaps
But those 'distant paradises' invariably seem to come with major underlying problems. The myth of the 'jolly natives'? I understand that the Seychelles is similar. Fascinating to experience; Fiji certainly was, but I see why hotel security is armed down that way.-

My idea would be to go to Samoa via New Zealand, and not go there direct but a gentle amble there. Security does not seem to be an issue there but I do not know. I only want three nights there. It may never happen of course.
