Anyone had experience of organising a boat tour in the Galapagos ? I am particularly interested in what happens if one tries to do it on the spot.

Not sure what on the spot means in the days of the Internet, but its certainly easy from Quito, and once you're at Guaquil you are committed. Go for a small boat, a full week, and be careful not to stand on one species when lining up a photo of another. I've never seen a place where the wildlife was so unconcerned about human presence, amazing place.
