Hobart - Tasmania

#195784

Postby EssDeeAitch » January 23rd, 2019, 9:58 am

We are off to Australia at the end of March (will GB still be afloat when we return and will planes still be allowed to land?) and we intend taking a week in Tasmania.

Can anyone recommend places to go and see/stay? Quite happy to be in one place and take day drives or to stay in a few different places. Comments appreciated.

Lucky you!

Drive to the top of Mount Wellington. In my opinion some of the most beautiful views in the world from up there. I was there in 1992 when we spent 10 days driving round the island, including Cradle mountain in the interior. Fantastic memories. We stayed in mostly backpacker type places.

We did a 7 day tour with very young (3 and 1) children. I'd recommend touring, but the children found it too much. Hobart itself is OK, the Salamanca Market is OK but not specially different to other markets. Port Arthur is good. We did the Wilderness Railway - the children were too young to appreciate it and it was quite expensive. Did a lot of scenic stuff which was brill but I would have to look it up to remember where we went.

We loved Tasmania - or at least the adults did!

Hi

It's been awhile since my last trip, but I agree with a sunrise/sunset view from the top of Mt Wellington. I'd also recommend:-

1. Wine Glass Bay, within Freycinet National Park. We stayed here https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... mania.html

2. Air Walk. https://tahuneadventures.com.au/adventures/airwalk/

3. Tesselated Pavement https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/eag ... d-pavement

4. Saturday mornings at https://www.salamancamarket.com.au/Home

5. https://portarthur.org.au/ Convict history site

6. https://www.parks.tas.gov.au/file.aspx?id=34557 Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain

7. The Neck at Bruny http://www.brunyisland.org.au/about-bru ... /the-neck/

8. The Nut at Stanley https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/attraction/thenut

9. Driving/riding the road into Queenstown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-nDXxedpN8

10 Wildlife at Bonorong https://www.bonorong.com.au/

11. Mona - "Art" https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/att ... newartmona

12. http://winetasmania.com.au/wine_trails/ ... wine_trail Wine tasting. Tasmanian wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc and their Chardonnays are well worth exploring.

Have a fantastic trip, it's a very special place.

Thanks for the suggestions and the links, very helpful indeed.
We have now booked for Hobart, Port Arthur and Swansea and will certainly be taking in a lot of the suggestions made.
