Zurich bound

Hello,

me and the missus are venturing into Switzerland for some Christmas cheer in a month's time. Just for a long weekend, so want to get in as much as possible. We've looked on a number of websites, including Tripadvisor and the Zurich tourism one, which is great, and we now have a few things on the list that we will do while we're there. However, we do a little bit information overload from our research.

So, what I'd like to ask - from those of you who've been there, lived there, holidayed there - is this:

If there was one thing that you would recommend to do, above all else, without fail, what would it be?

Looking forward to seeing the list.
Many thanks in advance

You haven’t been overwhelmed with responses, so I asked the other half who said:

“Having dinner in the altstadt”.

That’s assuming you are not only Zurich bound but intend to stay there.

If not, I’m sure the replies will be of more interest.

To further refine the suggestion of dining in the Altstadt, at the risk of sending you somewhere slightly touristy, I'd suggest lunch or dinner in Zeughauskeller. Food is very traditional Swiss, staff are welcoming and the beer/wine is great also.

Despite having spent many many weeks in Zurich on business trips, and that it's a very pleasant place to stroll about, I would actually suggest getting out of town, taking the train to the mountains and experiencing the real Switzerland!

I've found the 'free' walking tour very interesting. You are expected to make a donation but the (english speaking, Zurich native) guide was excellent. Took about 1.5-2 hours from memory and the area covered was fairly compact. It's a good chance to meet other visitors and get tips based on their experiences.

Mr CPFG,

Looking forward to reading what exciting things you found out during your weekend in Zurich!

For me, I found the 2 hr (each way) train ride out of Zurich (on the old line) to Goschenen towards the Gottard very interesting. Spiral tunnels and loop backs. You see the church at Wassen three times, and see how brilliant were the Victorian engineers.

Did you decide to stay a little longer than planned?

No, I just forgot that I'd said I'd feedback.

Found some nice places to eat, especially and most importantly, a lovely fondue place - Swiss Chuchi. Also B.good - a fast food place.

We went up the Uetliberg mountain in the snow.
We did the Landesmuseum and the Zunfstadt (Guildhouse) museum.
Went shopping in the Christmas markets - around four from memory.
Made beeswax candles.

Walked around a lot, took a few photos, drank Glühwein and a local gin called Turicum which was served with peppercorns and a dried orange slice.

That's all I remember.

Would I go again? Not sure.
