Yes, Venice can be pricey like that. As a student, I remember paying three days' food money for an ice cream and a soft drink on Piazza San Marco. Still, at least the view was nice. 
Gotta love some of those TripAdvisor respondents, though. "I went there just to see if what friends of mine had said was true and it was actually worse than I expected." I expect he spends his spare time bashing his head with a hammer to see if it's true that it hurts?
