Hi
I've got a new pc with a wireless lan card which is great but I actually want to use the Ethernet cable to connect with.
Can I just plug the wire into the pc and the modem and it will work or do I have to do something else like enabling things?
Help please..

Re: Ethernet cable
The cable will go into a port liker this
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-5 ... 33bb90a10b
I would expect it to "just work" with modern operating systems.
If you can;t find such a port, or it doesn;t "just work" then come back here and post again.
Note that you will should disconnect from any wifi networks if using the on board Network Interface Card (NIC) ie this cable port.

Re: Ethernet cable
Hi Lesley, mostly it should work, so give it a try. If it doesn't then more information is needed.
Operating System of pc, and maybe some information on your Router. I suspect you have a router and not a modem, but I could be wrong.
Hope that helps

Assuming it has one of course. Is is automatically part of the specification for ultra thin laptop models?
For desktops, I suppose it would be part of the normal configuration as well, but there may be exceptions.

It could be both, for example a Virgin cable modem and router. The Virgin engineers tend to call them modems. (The marketing blurb calls them "media hubs").

Re: Ethernet cable
Hi
It is a pc with a virgin hub.
I have just plugged the cable in and the internet works so I guess that is it.
In the network and sharing centre it now shows the connection as ethernet and in the network connections it shows the wifi with a red cross by it i.e. not connected.
I think that is all fine.. Thanks one and all. It's so good when there are experts on hand.

I'd blinking well hope so. many companies won't have wifi networks connecting to internal secured networks for starters, so such a beast would be useless for any commercial sales.

Re: Ethernet cable
I once worked with someone who said, "Expert, hmmmm. X - the unknown quantity, spurt - a drip under pressure". Very wise man.
