TV picture breaking up

#138457

Postby colin » May 11th, 2018, 11:38 pm

The TV image on some of the more obscure free view channels has started breaking up on our set, re tuning makes no difference. The main channels BBC ITV C4 etc are fine. Does anyone know if it's a problem with the aerial or is the box on the way out?
Cheers

yes before doing anything else check and double check all your connections..plugs in tight and so on
it is usually a 'reception' problem
if you are lucky it will NOT be the roof aerial!!

and check neighbours reception before getting expensive roof guys in!!

Thanks, luckily the aerial is in the loft, there has been some kind of rodent squatting up there recently perhaps desperate for some thing to eat it chewed the cable.

Have you checked to see if there are any engineering works currently affecting your transmitter?

Your mum has a packet of washing powder on the roof ?!? :D

I'm taking it as a given that you've checked the aerial connection to your TV/box ;)

Go to here: https://ukfree.tv/extras/settings, stick in your postcode and click Predict and then, on the resulting page, double-click on the bouncing transmitter icon in the map. That should get you a list of what's broadcast from your local transmitter along with various related info, like this: https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Crystal_Palace

Now, going down the multiplexes and looking at the rightmost column, Watts, do the "more obscure" channels you are having problems with all happen to be on the lower powered muxes? And/or do they happen to be on muxes marked DTG-6? Channels on both the lower powered muxes and the DTG-6 (DVB-T2) muxes are more prone to breakup due to a weaker signal reaching your TV (for whatever reason).

Now, take note of the mux channel & frequency (e.g. "C29 (538.0MHz)") of each of the ones that have channels you are getting breakups on and, as a double check, go verify that on your TV (somewhere in the menus you'll find something that'll give you that information for the channel you are watching). Then scroll down to "How will <your transmitter> transmission frequencies change over time?" and look to see if they've changed frequencies recently, and in particular if they've been bunged into the 600MHz band, as there's been a shuffle round for many (all?) transmitters a couple of months back.

Now look at the aerial group(s) for the channels on your transmitter to see if they match the aerial you've got. There's a coloured bung on the end of the aerial that tells you what its group is. The information is in the page you've been looking at, but you may find http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/reception_guide easier to decode. Click on Click here to show/hide table under the coloured group blocks and check that all of the UHF channel numbers (Cnn) from your transmitter are within the colour of the bung in your aerial.
