Re: Looking for a Nexus 5 replacement?
I like the look of that - I need a new phone soon, my OnePlus2 is losing battery life and I can't find a way to replace the battery satisfactorily (i.e. not a fake that might explode!).
I was wondering if it had dual SIM and it does, my current phone has and while I have never needed it, I like the idea of it (I used it briefly when I was in the process of changing contracts and could use the credit on the old contract and still use the new one at the same time, but that won't happen often, I was more thinking I might get a separate business number at some point, or want to buy a SIM if I had any extended time abroad).
I had also looked a NUU phones, which also seem OK and are pretty cheap, so I will compare these two.
I like a large screen so I can use it like a tablet, play games, read documents etc.

But the Moto has the full fat Android Oreo, I specifically wanted Android one, plain vanilla and I am delighted with my choice. The aluminium case makes it feel way more than 230 quids worth. The Zeiss camera optics are nice to have too.
Also, Motorolla are less than stellar at issuing updates and bug fixes. I haven't seem anything since 1st August 2016!

Re: Looking for a Nexus 5 replacement?
Another phone worth considering for those who prefer value to posing factor is the Honor 9 Lite, made by Huawei.
I've used a OnePlus One for the last three years and have been very impressed with it, but the battery life was beginning to falter, and it has suffered from a lack of updates to the Cyanogen software for a while now.
On a recommendation from another forum, I found the Honor 9 Lite and having done some research, bought one. It only came today but so far I'm very impressed with it, and for £169.99, including a clear case which protects the back of the phone, I think it's great value, quite a bit less than I paid for the OPO three years ago.
And, Mel, it is a dual sim phone (the second part of the holder can either take a second sim or a microSD card if the 32Gb capacity of the phone is insufficient.)

And, yes, I believe my OnePlus 2 has not been upgraded for about a year now. I've had it about two and a half years I think.

Yes, spyware.
I'd have to leave my phone at home as I'd not be allowed to take it into my workplace.* We once had an applicant who had worked for them and the CEO 'joked' that we shouldn't even open the CV on the email........but, he didn't want to interview him!
Mel
* not really, obviously, but it would be looked upon unfavourably if anyone knew

A lot of BT's network is Huawei (and Vodafone's mobile network)
What could possibly go wrong?

How reassuring...
There was a Joe Rogan podcast the other day with an ex CIA field guy, quite a bit of chat about Huawei and the general Chinese state attitude to honouring IP rights (they don't...)
In the days when far eastern dumb electronics were dominant it wasn't really an issue, the trouble with all this IoT stuff and the networking potential for spying is rather worrying. Even 'open source' doesn't really solve it as how much firmware/microcode is non proprietary these days?
For those with battery issues, put a new one in, it's generally a five to ten minute DIY job.
I paid a tenner for a new official LG one from Amazon.
Get the little tool packs with spudgers and suction cups, specialist screwdrivers et al for as little as a couple of quid. I splashed out on a 'luxury' £3.99 one, was fine. Loads of Youtube tutorials on most common phones for disassembly, battery replacement etc.

Re: Looking for a Nexus 5 replacement?
It might be a ten minute job for you, but there is no way I could do anything that fiddly.
And from what I have read, One Plus don't do replacement batteries, so none are "official" anyway.

One Plus won't make the batteries, they'll be a badged generic.
According to this ifixit tutorial the One Plus Two is rated 'easy' and the comments thread has loads of links to the correct battery (BLP597), even if it isn't 'official'.

My phone would involve soldering which moves it way out of my comfort zone.

Sadly this has to factored in before buying stuff these days. Many reviews will cover this issue now.
Loads of popular tablets and light and thin ultrabooks have everything soldered in, battery, RAM, SSD, graphics chips et al.
I partly understand why the manufacturers do it, but it is really annoying, I hate being held to ransom on servicing and upgrades.(I doubt it's even cost effective most of the time to get manufacturer/service centre upgrades because of this.)
The conspiracist theory side of me can't help thinking built in obsolescence is a major reason behind these decisions. Reduce the effective lifecycle and force new hardware purchases to offset the market saturation problem...

Re: Looking for a Nexus 5 replacement?
I can find plenty of OnePlus 'branded' batteries on Amazon and Ebay but it's impossible to tell if they are kosher, there are nearly always no reviews or just the odd one.
I dunno, with that and the lack of upgrades I think it is just time for a new phone.
It's very annoying though. And not environmentally friendly at all!

Recycle your old phone. I just got 25 quid for my Nexus 5 which will be reused someplace else. It is a whole lot better than leaving it in the drawer then sending it to landfill in five years time when you "discover" it still lying where you left it.
Well, obviously I will do that. I have recycled all my old phones.

I generally go off of sales volume as an indicator, but I shy away from eBay, too many drop shipping sharks.
With Amazon affiliates at least you know there's no issue getting a refund.
There are high street/market stall type outfits that will do battery replacement for you if you want, just haggle the price down now you know the battery prices and that it's a five minute easy job!
