Android phone - keeps flitting between messenger and messages?

Moto G5 andriod phone.

The biggest PITA with it is that for messages (ie SMS) and Messenger (ie Facebook chat thing) it keeps asking me if I want to slip between them whenever I go to use one option or another,. eg go to send a text "do you wish to use messenger to send SMS". It gives me an oiption yes or no, but the "no" option then just doesn;t let me use messages to send a text! and vice versa for messenger.

How do i stop this tedious behaviour, and just use messenger for FB chat, and messages for texts? I have googled but to no avail whatsoever.

I see that Messenger also shows me SMS messages, but if I use Messages (the blue icon on the bottom row) it just works as normal for SMS messages. I only use Messenger if I want to send a message to someone I know uses that system.

For clarity I only want to use messages for SMS, and messenger for FB messaging. It is the phone that keeps trying to dlip me between the two to handle "both" and not permitting any answer but "yes" to do so.

Try Settings/Apps/FB Messenger/Open by default/Clear defaults

My FB Messenger has no defaults set, and my Google message does, (and it works the way you want it to, SMS on Google message and FB messages on FB messenger.) I don't get any alerts.

Generally you need to set up defaults during installation.
If you cleared all specific app data or re-installed the app you might get the option to re-allocate the defaults if the first option doesn't work.

*Edit;That's on Marshmallow 6.0.1

That's your issue then, you haven't set messages to be your default SMS app.

Settings/Apps/Gear wheel/Advanced/Default Apps/SMS App (set it to messages).

I have no app called SMS App.

I have an app named messages. It has a setting called sms app, which is set to be messages (and if I tap it it says messages (default).

messenger similarly has "sms app" set to "No"

Sounds like some corruption then.
If the first option shows no defaults for either Messenger or Messages and the second option does ( for messages as default SMS app) then they are disagreeing with each other...

Try clearing the caches on both apps, you can do it globally from Settings/Storage and USB/cached data.
If that doesn't help try Settings/Apps/Messages/Storage/clear data/

If it still plays up re-install the apps (not sure if you can uninstall Messages, think it might be classed as a native Android OS app now...)
In the Play store app go to My apps and games and then the library tab and you'll see uninstalled apps listed there and can hit the install button on Messenger (and Messages if it will uninstall.)

Redo the default sms app. permission.

Good luck!
