Malwarebytes updates
These are offered very frequently. Should one always take them up or is it just to try to lure you into their premium (paid for) service?

Re: Malwarebytes updates
are these virus DB updates, or software updates?
TBH I'd accept them. If I end up somehow ending up on some premium trial requiring eventual purchase I just delete/remove and resinstall

Re: Malwarebytes updates
Database updates are frequent (daily?) and should always be accepted - that's really the point of a tool like this - to maintain protection against new threats.
If you're on the free edition, I think you can't have the Realtime Protection feature, so you need to run a scan every so often. I would suggest daily?
Application updates are less frequent. They won't "lure" you into paying. Personally I would accept them. (Disclaimer: I'm on the Premium edition)

Re: Malwarebytes updates
Malwarebytes - at least the free manual-scan version - is often (rightly) recommended in these and other forums.
But I have never seen it feature in any of the comparative tests done by the various PC magazines, at least not the ones to which I subscribe.
Could it be Malwarebytes' lack of paid-for advertising or what?

Re: Malwarebytes updates
Many thanks to all. I will follow your advice. I also have the free one that comes with Windows 10 and they tell me fairly frequently that they have done a scan and noting untoward detected.

That would be Defender.
It is not commonly known, but Windows 10's Defender has Malware protection (PUP/PUA) built in as well as AV protection. Normally this option is only made available on Enterprise systems, but it can be enabled on Home or Pro in the registry.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/322 ... -10-a.htmlWhile Microsoft announced the new PUA feature as only available for the Enterprise edition of Windows 10, Home and Pro editions can also enable it on their Windows 10 PCs to block the deployment of adware during software installations.
