Change to Sky: Ethernet adaptor problems

#145764

Postby GeoffF100 » June 15th, 2018, 10:21 am

I recently completed a ping pong from Plusnet to Sky, to Plusnet, and back to Sky again. Everything was fine before the change over, and everything still appears fine with my Android phone, IPad and Lubuntu on an old PC, but I am having problems connecting via Ethernet to my main machine running Windows 10.

When I first connected the new router, Windows 10 reported that did not have an internet connection. I ran network diagnostics, and Windows fixed the problem by resetting the Ethernet adaptor. It said that the problem was that the default gateway was not found, and that the problem had been fixed.

Sometimes, but not always, when I do a full Windows 10 reboot, the problem recurs and is fixed in the same way. Sometimes the problem is reported as the default gateway, sometimes the IP configuration. Any ideas?

I just got a different dialog saying that the network had changed, but it went away before I had a chance to find a button to click, and the web page loaded. I rebooted, and to no internet connection dialog appeared returned, but it disappeared before I had a chance to hit the button, and the web page loaded.

I have rebooted and noticed another change. The network icon no longer has a little triangle. When I hover over it, it says "Network 2 Internet Access". I did not have that before. Perhaps Windows has fixed the problem.

No, I just rebooted. As before. No valid IP configuration, but Windows network diagnostics fixed it by resitting the Ethernet adaptor.

Similar here and since a recent Windows 10 update.

My network adaptor is Nvidia. I have not yet tried a re-install

That is reassuring. Windows 10 has recently installed updates on my machine too. Perhaps Microsoft will fix it.

Is this something that might be temporarily fixed (until Microsoft release an updated update, at least...) by manually setting the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway of the network adaptor?

It seems that it might be the auto-configuration that's getting itself muddled, but if you can get it working and then carry out an 'ipconfig /all' in a CMD shell, then the details you need to manually set will usually be available under the 'Ethernet adaptor' section.

Just brought up for discussion initially, rather than trying to direct anyone to action at the moment, but I seem to remember having similar issues in the dark and distant past, and I think I managed to fix it using the above manual IP settings.

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

I have no problems getting things working. Right clicking on the network icon on the bottom bar, or opening a browser brings up the network diagnostics dialog. Click the button and Windows fixes it. It was worrying that the problem kept returning. I was cursing Sky, but perhaps it is not their problem.

The triangle icon is denoting duff connection.
The square denotes OK connection.

Also with Sky, but very happy especially after a recent Openreach line replacement and top-end speeds.

What I was trying to say though, was that once it was working, if you took down the relevant IP/Subnet Mask/Default Gateway details from an 'ipconfig /all' command in a CMD shell, and then set those details as being fixed in the Ethernet adaptor settings window, then the issue might not return.

I would not want you to try it at the moment, but raised it for discussion/confirmation really.

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

I got fed up with this problem and phoned Sky. I answered their dumb bot's questions as best I could, and was asked whether I had switched off the router, switched it back on again and pressed the reset button. I had not, so I gave it a try. It appears to have worked.

Hmmm, sounds like they were not so dumb after all ;)
