Works 8 Download

#147948

Postby nowretired » June 25th, 2018, 5:43 pm

Does anyone know where I can get a hold of Works 8 for free or a free download?

I used to have the DVD but it has gone missing.
I do have the key for it.

I can read the .wps files using another program but I thought I would install Works 8 on my computer.

The only copies of Works 8 I can find to download come from 'dubious' sites that I wouldn't trust.

Apparently you can still buy it if you know where to look...

It's your machine so it's your call but I'd suggest you think again. Especially if you utilise Works file formats (as your post implies) and may ever send files (and spreadsheet files in particular) to others. You probably don't know what OS or applications they use or whether they'd be able to find a way to open your Works files in their computing environment so why make life harder for (some of) them?

You don't have to steer yourself up a stagnant back-water. You could use, say, LibreOffice and exploit the flexibility it affords without being overwhelmed by the functionality it provides: just use the bits you need and ignore the rest.

Cheers!

Why is everyone so against me installing Works 8 on my computer?

Everyone? With two replies so far, only one said don't use it. I just implied that the unofficial downloads may contain malware and gave you a link to find a second hand CD ;)

I'm in favour of old software if it still does the job (I have several apps from around 2000 I use regularly). The risk you run is that it may stop working with the next version of Windows. At least with Works you have LibreOffice available should that happen.

Frankly because it is old, unsupported software with low interoperability wrt it's file format (i.e. no-one else uses it) and there are much better, free, open-standard alternatives available such as LibreOffice.

Why do you want to install Works over say LibreOffice, is it because of familiarity?

Strange - I thought I'd provided some explanation for my suggestion that you think again (while acknowledging that it's entirely your own call).

Cheers!
