Windows 10 Update Failed

Hi,

I've had an update which has failed since April. I'm considering re-setting windows. Has anyone done this, what does it get rid of. Aside from all the stuff which comes with windows. I basically have Microsoft Office, Outlook, Chrome and McAfee installed. Will all my emails, office documents and chrome settings be safe ??

Thanks

Which update?

KB number?

And which version of 10 are you on - the latest is 1803 17134.137

Check using:
winver
in the search box.

All installed apps that did not come with Windows...

Yes, all those will be removed. You'll have to reinstall them afterwards if you want them again. Make sure you have all necessary keys to hand before doing the reset.

You will be given the option to keep your personal files though.

We need to know what the update is and what your current version is before we can say if a reset is going to help. Look in your Update History to see the name of the failing update. There are probably less drastic measures that can solve this for you, but we need more information.

A trivial point: if you are using Outlook (i.e. chargeable desktop Outlook) and your email account (or all of them if you have several) are either IMAP or 'Exchange', and - if IMAP - your calendars and contacts are stored remotely, your reinstall should be easy: IMAP and Exchange will rebuild your local email store automatically. But just make a note of ALL the account settings before you reinstall (for IMAP, keeping a screen-scrape of the settings is useful).

^^ Likewise with Chrome browser if you are 'logged in' and run a partial/full 'sync'.

All you have to do is re-install it, log in and hey presto all your previous settings/extensions/bookmarks and tweaks come up as was. Whole process takes about two minutes.

Hi

OS Build: 16299.309

KB4023057 has failed

I guess this update is blocking any further updates from completing?

Thanks

Hi,

No, i'm afraid i don't have that setup. Emails are downloaded to Outlook, so i presume everything is stored locally.

Thanks

You guessed right.

Try it via a download from here:-
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... date-relia

This update includes reliability improvements that affect the update service components in Windows 10 Versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703 and 1709.

Press the Windows key plus X and then 'system' to see if yours is running X64 or X86 to determine the correct download.

Once installed, try Windows 'Check for updates' again.

Unfortunately that link does not provide a download, in fact it says the only way to get KB4023057 is through windows update...

Your build 16299.309 was the March 13th cumulative update. You should be on 16299.502 by now Something, maybe the failed KB4023057, maybe something else, is preventing you getting updates. If you use a third-part AV, try temporarily turning it off.

Try resetting Windows Update.

If KB4023057 still fails and prevents you getting recent updates, try hiding KB4023057.

That's a good 'fix'. Even 'updating' to the same version as you currently have will fix a multitude of problems.

There are two ways to use the MCT, one is to 'Update this PC now'. The other, and IMHO more reliable way is to 'create media for another PC' and download the ISO. Then double-click on the ISO file to mount it and run the Setup you'll find there to start the update.

The MCT will update you to 1803 whichever way you use it. If there's a reason to want to stay on 1709, build 16299 then you'll need the 1709 ISO. This is not available through the MCT, but there are other ways to get a 1709 ISO direct from Microsoft. Ask if you need to get one.

Apologies.

Did not check that the link just opened to details of installed files.

I will shut up now as you, Bree, are far more advanced than I am with Windows 10 issues.

I will say that the latest version 1803 17134.137 is far more stable then previous ones - reliability monitor now shows 100% for Windows-related issues since I updated at the end of June.

Let's hope that Microsoft keeps it that way.

That's OK, it was a good idea. 99% of the time the KB article does include a link to get the standalone installer from the Microsoft Update Catalog - just not for this one ;)

Thanks
Andy :)

First, try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

KB4093112 was the April 2018 cumulative update. It shouldn't still be trying to install that. The current cumulative update is KB4284822, issued 21 June 2018 (which includes all the April patches, and then more). If after running the troubleshooter you still can't update, then this one IS available as a standalone installer.

Microsoft wrote:To download and install this update, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/hel ... -kb4284822

NB: if you get windows update working correctly, you may well find the next update it wants to install is the 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1803'. This will upgrade you to the latest version of Windows 10. You are currently on the previous version, 1709.

Hi,

Thanks, after a lot of re-starting, deleting McAfee and jumping up and down on the laptop, the updates now appear to be upto date.

Thanks
