Storage and memory prices

Analysis NAND oversupply is becoming a distinct possibility – with an increasing memory supply chasing a market that can’t absorb all the bits and bytes at prices that provide profits for suppliers.

No NAND flash maker wants to create a glut, and each is convinced that they are behaving rationally – although, collectively, they are not. Yet time and time again in the memory (DRAM and NAND) industries profit-boosting scarcity has been followed by a loss-making glut. The lemmings know the cliff is ahead and steadily match towards it, as if doomed.

I've noticed the prices on SSD's and RAM have been coming down over the past couple of months having been pretty high for the last year or more.
So if you are thinking of upgrading your current (or old) PC, or doing your own new PC build, keep your eyes peeled for some bargains in the near to medium future...

Shucks. I just paid £2 more for my 120 GB SSD. Old technology RAM is currently cheap, but DDR4 and low voltage DDR3 are expensive, and not available in small capacities.

I have just checked the price of internal Samsung 500GB SSDs on Amazon.

The Samsung MZ-76E500B/EU 500 GB 860 EVO Sata III 64L V NAND Solid State Drive.
Data transfer rate of 550 MB per second.
Model year of 2017
Read speed 550GB per second
Price £89.99.

Also listed is the Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive.
Data transfer rate is 750MB per second
Model year 2014
Read Speed 540GB per second
Price £99.00

I don’t understand why there are two models for sale. The older one seems to be faster and is more expensive. Actually I think that when I checked yesterday, one of them cost more than £100.

^^ All the SSD manufacturers have ranges of products from budget through midrange up to premium 'domestic' and even 'enterprise' above that.
The performance and price generally goes up accordingly, unless they are getting rid of old stock or discontinued models in which case you can get a high performance drive for a bargain price, which is the one to go for ideally.

The problem is you need to know in advance which models are worth having and the only way round that is to do the homework first (unfortunately) so you are doing apples to apples comparisons.

I read an in-depth comparative review of several manufacturer's SSDs some time last year. The conclusion was that Samsung's drives wiped the floor with the other makes tested, based on the number of writes before failure.

So I don't suppose either option would disappoint.
