New tablet

I am considering a replacement for my 2012 ipad (3rd generation) - it takes ages to start- sometimes goes back to home screen and other wee glitches. I have a desk top and iphone and was initially thinking of Kindle fire (I also have a paper white that is always in my bag) however I have been told that I would really hate the slowness and clumsiness of it after iphone.

Its use would be for when on holidays and travelling for -so downloading and viewing films and TV shows - but of course it could/would have other uses.I could only download 5 half hour shows on ipad and is also heavy.

I had not wanted to go the price of another ipad though, as now have an iphone for past 5 years. Hauwei has been suggested but like Fires there is more than one in the range!

Anyone with a recommendation? Agree - disagree with the Fire and Hauwei?

Thank you
P

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. Much cheaper and better than any iPad. Which agreed. I paid £237.

I am also looking out for a replacement, my Tab 3 has become a "DOG" recently. For the price I agree with Tab S2. Where did you get it for £237 as that is a tad cheaper than i have found.

It was Argos back in January, I think its a bit of a waiting game, probably overstocked from Christmas. Currys seems to be cheapest at present £299.

If you were previously happy with it but it's become a dog and you're thinking of a replacing it, it would be worth first trying a factory reset and re-installing your apps.

In theory it should be as fresh and zippy as the day you bought it. It's possible that since then the apps you use have been updated and bloated to the point where they need more CPU and memory so it's not guaranteed to please you, but it has to be worth a try.

My wife has a Kindle Fire, bought for the single purpose of reading library books online. Frankly it is a pain, because of what Amazon have done to Android. In retrospect an up to date tablet using the latest version of Android would have been better.

Provided that it has a good processor and adequate memory, I think that a low cost tablet will do as well as an overpriced Samsung product.

I'd suggest a visit to PC World or John Lewis and have a play with some of the suggestions from the list.
It's very difficult to gauge the screen quality, responsiveness etc. from reviews, best to try out and get the balance between performance and price in your own head.

If the purchase can be delayed I'd hold off until Black Friday.

Is there any benefit to a 4:3 screen over 16:10 if video is the major use? That's a lot of money for black bars, and 16:10 tablets are far more compact for packing/carrying around. I find an old galaxy tab E is ideal for cabin baggage/train journeys.

If you don't mind going down the Chinese import route then the Xiaomi mi pad 4 has great specs for the money.
