Yes, it was withdrawn late on Friday and I posted the news on Saturday morning viewtopic.php?p=171853#p171853

In a few cases the upgrade process deletes your files, the Documents, Photos etc. If you have already updated to 1809 without problems then it is safe to continue using it, but if you haven't don't update until Microsoft fix this and reissue the update.

In fact, it's almost impossible to update to 1809 now, even if you wanted to. MS have withdrawn all possible ways of getting 1809, if you try to download Windows 10 from Microsoft at present you will get version 1803 until further notice.

Anyone seen an ETA for a fix?
I've been busy with house selling shenanigans so I'm completely out of the loop on all current IT fronts.

No, nothing from MS yet. The original start date for the automatic roll-out was to have been today, the 9th. As today is also 'Patch Tuesday' we may learn more once this month's cumulative update is released at around 6pm UK time.

For those that that have installed 1809 without problems MS have said it's safe to keep it.

Yep, there you go, an exact parallel of what I was describing. 'Auto-update' can be a curse on your machine, so that even they are now - after the event - telling people NOT to install it. It is quite shocking how incomepetant they appear to be.

The October Update, version 1809 has bee re-released today.

Microsoft wrote:On November 13, 2018, we will begin the re-release of the Windows 10 October Update (version 1809), Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server, version 1809. We encourage you to wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically.

For those already on 1809, there is a Cumulative Update which you should get through Windows Update shortly. This will update you to the re-released build.

Download here if you want to go the MCT USB flash drive (et al) 1809 feature update route.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar ... /windows10

It was showing the April 2018 1803 release an hour ago so I'm assuming the change is the updated October 1809 feature update with all the previous dodgy bits removed...:)
Care to confirm Bree?

Yes. You will now get the MediaCreationTool1809.exe from that page, which can either be used to 'Upgrade this PC now' or to 'Make media for another PC' if you wish to make the ISO or USB install media. The build it will download and install or make media for is 17763.107 which has been on test in the Insiders Preview Ring for a week or so now. The known bugs that caused MS to pause the release appear to have been fixed.

The November Cumulative Update for 1809 will then update this to build 17763.134.

If you are on 1803 then Microsoft's advice is to wait for the October Update to be offered to you. The MS telemetry tells them which make/model of PCs have had issues updating 1809, so they will delay offering it to those PCs until the issues have been dealt with. It's safest to wait, but if you are prepared to take the risk then you can use the MCT.

Bloody patch Tuesday. My desktop computer is locked up solid this morning, while the Windows update ("your device is missing important security and quality fixes") goes on and on and on. That damn little string of pearls going round and round and round. Can't get into the web or email at all. And task manager's on 30% of CPU. Thank goodness for my laptop or I'd be out of business.

Grrrr. It's enough to make me buy an Apple. Well, almost.

Put it on 'metered' connection (Ethernet or WiFi) and use the MCT route for feature updates https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/softwar ... /windows10
and Windows Update Catalogue for security, cumulative and the rest if you want full control.
On metered you'll get a list of pending updates but it won't download, so just cut and paste the update numbers you want to install, download to your C drive or an external USB flash.

After my SSD failure last week I had to boot into my backup W10 HDD which is set up metered, so no updates flooding me, just carried on working as normal. It's actually still on 1709, I've got an 1803 MCT USB flash drive, just haven't bothered to update from 1709 yet.

Cheers Infrasonic, it seems to have settled down a little bit now. I've been reading this morning about ways to prevent the routine scans from Windows Defender happening at times when I'm trying to do other things, and so far it's been a bit quieter.

In fact I believe I've probably got a terminally wounded hard drive, which might also explain a lot. But that's another subject for another thread. :D

SSD prices are very cheap at the moment (Black Friday soon...), and things like Defender scans become invisible effectively with one as your C drive. Updates are far quicker too. Cloning the boot drive is pretty straightforward, as is a clean install.

My only caveat would be to spring for one with a five year warranty, my Sandisk Ultra 11 had 3 years and failed two months after the expiry.
The Samsung 850 Pro's (an older model) actually have a 10 year warranty, but aren't that cheap.
I'll probably go for a Samsung this time around and pay the extra for the peace of mind though.

Just noticed that the SANDISK SSD Plus - 480GB, is on Amazon at just £51 delivered -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01F9G46Q8

Pricing history here -

Not quite sure how much lower something like that could go by waiting for Black Friday, so might be worth snapping one up now if you're in the market for a relatively large SSD.

Oh, great! After persuading me to spend £66 on one a few weeks ago, now you tell me it's £15 cheaper. Groan!

And to rub salt in the wound, my laptop (with the SSD) has just died. I think it's a power problem. The supply seems OK but no power on the laptop, so I'm currently suspecting a connector problem.Oh well, at least black friday is imminent

I always think that it's important in these particular situations to remember the happy times.....

Have you tried it without the battery in?

For those of you that want more control over how and when you get your W10 updates there's an entire thread over on Ten Forums discussing various methods of blocking the automatic downloading/installation (including metered connection which is what I use).
It gets very geeky in places but persevere as there's some good information there and not all the solutions require level 10 coding chops.

On closing down my Windows 10 PC last night, it indicated that it wanted to carry out a lengthy update, so I left it on overnight (unusually). This morning the front screen welcomed me to the October Update. In February!

1809 has had 'issues', I've not even been offered it yet via Windows Update and it's only been installed on about 12% of W10 machines so far.
I have got it saved on a MCT USB flash drive so at some point, when I'm feeling brave, I'll give it a go...

Thanks for the response. I knew there were difficulties with the 1809 update, but I wasn't aware how far this update had slipped. I checked my other Windows 10 PC (an upgrade from Windows 7). It is still 1803.
To a non-technical user it may seem strange to see displayed a bold message welcoming the user to an "October Update". One might have thought that Microsoft would have modified the message!

It's not so much that it's slipped, it seems MS are just being cautious about how fast they roll it out automatically. The 'little difficulty' with user files being deleted that caused the first release to be withdrawn was fixed quite early on, enabling the release to resume mid-November.

If your MCT USB was made in October, wipe it and make a new one as yours is likely to be the original release with 'the big bug'. If you made it any time after November it will be the updated fixed version, but if it was made in the last month it will be a newer update, build 17763.253.

I updated at the beginning of October and have been using 1809 on all my machines since then. Didn't find any significant bugs even then, so you probably don't have to be that brave to try it. ;)
