Truecrypt/NTFS/Windows 10 issue

#177704

Postby Stompa » November 2nd, 2018, 12:37 am

I keep a load of files in an encrypted Truecrypt volume, formatted as NTFS with NTFS compression enabled. On XP, whenever I ran out of space, I'd just create a larger Truecrypt volume, and copy all the files in the smaller one across. I've just tried the same on W10, and there's a problem.

I've got a 350MB volume created on XP. So I created a 500MB volume using W10, and copied the files across. But the weird thing is they dont fit! I've tried setting the cluster size on the 500MB volume to be the same as that on the 350MB one, but still no luck. Weirdly, they do fit if I disable NTFS compression on the 500MB drive.

Any ideas? I'm mystified!

Thanks

Have you tried Veracrypt (using Truecrypt tools) to deal with legacy Truecrypt file systems?

Thanks, I'll give it a try, though I was hoping to avoid VeraCrypt because it was much slower at mounting drives (though with the advantage of increased security) when I tried it some time ago.

Either way, a workaround that does appear to work is to copy all the files across and then switch on NTFS compression on the destination drive. I'd still be interested to know if anybody understands why it doesn't work if you switch on compression before copying.

Thanks

Well having just tried VeraCrypt, it appears to suffer from the same problem as TrueCrypt.

Perhaps the clue is in your title? Windows 10 issue.

You may be right. Unfortunately it's a bit of an obscure problem, and Google hasn't been much help. I might try asking on the VeraCrypt forum.

Maybe not a bad idea.

I did have a slight problem on OSX, but switching to Vera sorted that out.

Good luck with it.

I seem to be getting some other odd behaviour. If I copy a file to an NTFS compressed TrueCrypt volume, the resulting file ends up compressed as expected. However, if I save a file from an application to an NTFS compressed TrueCrypt volume, the resulting file ends up not compressed, which is not what I would have expected.

Time to give up on using NTFS compression with TrueCrypt I think!
