New iPad 2......Query Apple ID

Setting up my new iPad, I’ve come across “Apple ID”.

I’ve not seen this before on my 2012 vintage iPad2 and I can’t see what benefit it might be for me?

My cynical side says this is just something to make it easier to sell Apps from the Apple App Store!

Am I being overly cynical?

Are you likely to use iCloud?

I never used it when I just had the one Apple device, preferring to use local storage for backups. You can use iCloud for backing up instead, although the free allocation is 5GB.

If you have more than one Apple device then iCloud can be a very convenient way of syncing certain documents across devices even if you choose not to use it for backing up.
