Java tells me there is an update
I go via control panel to Java and select update now
message....you haven't used Java in 6 months do you need it? uninstall
on basis I have done everything I usually do during past 6 months it appears that I do not need it
what is it? and should I hae it?

Uninstall it.
It's very unlikely that you need it. It is also a security risk, particularly if you have any Java browser plugins. If you do find anything in the future requires Java I suggest you avoid using it.
