Problem with Mac Mini losing wifi printer connections

#237190

Postby scrumpyjack » July 17th, 2019, 9:06 am

My daughter's Mac Mini is wifi connected to several printers in our house. The Printers are all wifi connected to a BT Wholehome wifi network, which works fine and there is also a Sky router.

Often her Mac loses its connection to the printers. We can fix this by setting the Mac to connect to the Sky router and then setting it back to the BT Wholehome - all then works fine - for a while.

The other PCs in the house are all Windows 10 and have no such problem.

Any idea how to stop the Mac Mini doing this?

Thanks

No Mac specific knowledge as I don't have any of their hardware, but presumably you are using DHCP to dynamically assign the WiFi?
Perhaps try using a static IP address approach for the Mac mini and see if that is more stable?

Thanks, I've tried that. Will report back how it goes!

If that doesn't solve it have a look at keeping the Mac mini on 5GHz (if possible) rather than 2.4 as it's generally less congested.

WiFi direct might be worth looking at too (quite common on printers these days), just as an A/B to see if it is the BT mesh system or Sky router causing the issue.
There was one poster on here who had constant issues with the BT system, even after firmware updates.

Thanks, will do. We are in the country with no other house in wifi range so I think it is unlikely congestion is the problem. Curious that no other devices have the problem.

The symptoms do lean towards the Mac mini being fussy, but only by A/B elimination can you really nail it down.
Congestion could be an issue on your own network if you have multiple PC's and printers all on DHCP WiFi.
In that situation I'd rather go for fixed IP for everything static (on a cable if possible) and keep DHCP WiFi for phones, tablets, laptops et al that are moving in and out of WiFi range.
