Win 7 Patch Tuesday fail

#244205

Postby Slarti » August 14th, 2019, 11:56 am

Any other Win 7 users having problems with the Windows 7 security rollup failing to install with an unknown error?

I have just tested that and successfully installed the August monthly rollup on two Win 7 machines, one x86 the other x64.

This prerequisite may be relevant....

Nope, that is in the list of installed updates.

I'm giving it another try, right now and will report back.

Postby Slarti » August 16th, 2019, 4:56 pm

Well after another fail Wednesday evening, I had to shut down for the evening due to family life demands.

Yesterday I ran Malwarebytes, Windows Defender scan and Checkdisk, none of which found anything, despite eating up the day.

This morning I started the computer, double checked for any disabled services that may had had an effect on updates (I usually have "TrustedInstaller" disabled as it seems to go mad and occupy much memory and thrash the processor at random moments and others for various security reasons) and started 3 that might be vaguely be involved, restarted the computer, spent some time clearing temp files and ran windows update again.

There were 2 updates available I for Microsoft Security Essentials and The Windows update I'm trying to do - August 13, 2019—KB4512506 (Monthly Rollup)

I did the security update and then tried the windows update and this time realised that it is failing as soon as it has finished the download. so from the More info link I decided to go the local install route and that also failed.

I have now found 4 Report.wer files, via Event Viewer which don't mean that much to me, but I'll add them to the end of this message in case they have meaning for someone else.

I'm wondering if it is worth trying in Safe Mode with networking.

Oh, and I have updated 2 other Win7 machines with no problems.

Well that was no help at all as it only relates to the finding of updates and downloading them and I'm getting past that

I think that I will see if things work if I go into safe mode andif not I may have to tink about biting the bullet and do a total re-install, and that I do not want to do.

Before that, try resetting and re-registering Windows Update. Option Two in this tutorial:

You posted that at 15:17 and between then and now I have
1) Read option 2, downloaded the bat file and run it (after having a look what it did)
2) Rebooted
3) Tried the update again, it failed
4) Followed the link at 7 and rand the reset scrip
5) Rebooted
6) Tried the update again, it failed
7) Followed the See Also link
8) Followed the link to Servicing Stack updates and then to the appropriate one for my Win7 and ran the update
9) Rebooted
10) Tried the update again, it worked, though it took forever to download, this time.

Rebooted to complete the update finished at 16:59

Thanks for all the help

Phew, that was a lot of hard work! Looks like the servicing stack was the key step. Glad to hear you got there in the end (and without needing a complete reinstall).

I have this update still to come.
I see it in the queue.
When multiple updates appear, I activate at most one or two a day, starting with the smallest.
Thankyou for the heads up.

I only have a few W7 machines now and only one is a physical machine (others are VMs). I generally install all important updates in one go, after searching for and hiding KB4493132 - the 'end of support' notification.

That way I don't accidentally miss out on things like the service stack update that caused Slarti so much grief.

I suspect that mine had somehow got corrupted as it is not something that I would have refused and I think that it was a June update and I did do June and July.
