Intermittent mouse freeze

#261861

Postby robbelg » November 3rd, 2019, 3:39 pm

Starting this morning my wireless mouse has been freezing ( actually it a logitech trackball but mouse is shorter)

Pointer just frozen in place ( its not the machine - keyboard input is normal )
Then after a few minutes it started working again, for a few minutes then freeze again.
Put in a new battery - same problem
Reboot machine - same
Moved receiver to a different USB slot ( This causes new set of drivers to be installed) - same
Swapped mouse out for the one I use with my laptop - same
Power off for an hour while I go out, boot up - same
Plug in an old wired mouse - works fine.

No new hardware or software, nothing has been moved.
Windows 7 Home premium

I'm out of ideas -any suggestions?

TIA Rob

Does the issue still manifest itself in Safe Mode?

Same problem

It's beginning to sound like wireless interference.

Some things to try -

1. Turn your wireless router off temporarily, and see if the problem stops. If it does, then changing the channel of your wireless network is likely to fix the problem for good.

2. Check that the wireless receiver for the mouse is in a clear and exposed position, as near to the mouse as possible.

3. Check that your PC work-area is free from mobile phones - they can sometimes cause these issues if they are local to keyboards and mice.

Cheers,

Assuming the new battery you put in was a new one and not, by accident, an old/expired one, and that the other suggestions made so far, including those made by Itsallaguess, haven't solved the problem, then I would be thinking of buying a new mouse.

Thanks for the suggestions but....

The router is the same one I've had for years and in the same position, the receiver and the mouse are in the same positions as ever, I've tried a different but identical mouse, the batteries (plural) I've tried are fresh out of the pack.

They might well be, but unbeknown to you, other people in the same location might now be saturating the same wireless channel that your router is currently using, so these are simple checks to help eliminate these potential issues.

Surely this process of elimination would suggest that the problem, in all likelihood, would be the RF receiver. Seems as if this is the only thing you ain't so far swapped over.

call in the experts !!!

seriously though............it might be as simple as a build up of dust/sticky on the base of the mouse?

i realise its a daft idea but it did actually happen with me a while back.........

I had this problem and corrected it by moving the receiver much closer to the mouse ,usb extension lead so receiver on back of monitor only a few inches from the mouse. All fine

Update

I put in another new battery and its working OK !

I suppose that's what you get with 7p batteries

Anyway thanks again for the suggestions, sorry to have wasted your time.
