That's the nice thing about using a virtual machine. Even on a host machine that has none of the required hardware, a VM can provide all the virtual hardware needed to support Windows 11.

Today the offer to upgrade to 11 appeared in Windows Update. After waiting a fortnight for the offer to appear I now have 11 back on my new 'main machine'.

It not only appeared in Windows Update for me but sprang up in a taskbar item. I told it to s*d off ... I'm happy to leave it to adventurous users like you to post-release test it for a year or two. :D

Oh I'm not as adventurous as I may appear, quite cautious really ;)

First, I tested upgrading this PC from 10 to 11 at the end of July when the first W11 Insider build was released. I had been using it for all my daily tasks for two months before the release version. So when I put it back to W10 to await the official upgrade I was confident all would work well with 11.

Plus at all times I have a Macriun Reflect system image of its W10 to fall back on. ;)

Took the plunge with this update yesterday
Every thing went seemlessly

First impressions.... "Rounded corners?"
At least I can move the start button to the left of the bar
- it was making things awkward where it was (hiding windows that had been half screen maximised that I was reading from)

Seems to work ok..I'll get used to the look (a bit of a Vista Aero vibe)
But I think at the moment W10 might just be a bit "cleaner" in the basics (wasting less screen)

Remember the outcry when Windows 8 replaced Windows 7's rounded corners with square ones? :D

Check out the vastly improved Settings app. Finally it actually has a logical hierarchical structure that you can navigate to find the setting you are looking for. ;)

On my new machine, I have got an invitation to upgrade this morning. Like others, I think I will leave it for now.

If you've just jumped from 7 to 10 (though I might be mixing up threads) I'd go straight to 11 to save you having to unlearn any stuff you haven't had to learn yet
- if that makes sense :?

That was me and I am very glad to have left W7 behind although that is down to the machine as much as anything else. As for W11 what you say of course makes sense but I am not all that confident about a brand new system not from my point of view but what about bugs and so on?

As for my experience with my new Dell Inspiron I do not know why I put up with the previous machine for so long.

No worries.
I just figure once I've decided I'll do something I prefer to do it sooner than later; and 11's more 7 that 10 visually (it's the curves!)

Enjoy the new machine, it can be quite liberating when things work well (although it's also good fun keeping old stuff going ;) )

Thanks. I will keep an eye out for any reviews/comments about W11 and will no doubt want to upgrade to W11 before the free upgrade expires in about a year or so. I was a bit of a dinosaur about my old W7!

The only factor which always worries me about updating to the lates Windows is the question: will my old software work? I'm a dinosaur, and I am quite happy with my old Excel and Word 2003. I particularly would like not to be left floundering with a later version of Excel - I do have one on a later machine but never got on with it, so don't use it.

If anyone has experience of W11 with these olders programs, I'd be grateful to hear from them. I don't suppose I am the only one concerned.

Breelander has reported in the past about using old app versions with up to date Windows OS' (10 +11) without too many problems.

The big downside to sticking with old unsupported OS/apps is the security aspects as new methods of compromising systems spring up daily.

If you keep them completely disconnected from the internet and other local PC's (LAN) it's much less of an issue.

I first started testing W11 on some of my machines in July with the very first release of an Insiders build, 22000.51. What struck me was just how stable it has been since the beginning. The big changes from W10 are in the design of the Start menu, the Taskbar and the Settings app. Underneath that the Windows kernel is very much the same as is used Windows 10, and just as stable. So yes, it has a brand new look, but it is built on solid foundations.

Of course, it is entirely up to you if/when you upgrade from 10 to 11. Beneath the surface 11 offers little truly new functionality. And 10 is in full support until 2025, so there's plenty of time to decide. ;)

The free upgrade from W7 to W10 still works today if you upgrade it yourself with an in-place upgrade using an ISO made by the Media Creation Tool. Only the free upgrade using the GWX app was time-limited, and MS worded their FAQ very carefully to say that.

Microsoft wrote:Is the Windows 10 free upgrade offer still available?
The Windows 10 free upgrade through the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app ended on July 29, 2016.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... cf00382445

There's no reason to expect the upgrade to 11 to be any different, though it may well stop being offered by Windows Update after a year. The digital licence has not changed, the one digital licence is valid for both W10 and W11. If a PC has a digital licence for one, you can clean install and activate either whenever you like, an upgrade should be no different.

If I am going to upgrade to Windows 11 I might as well do it now I guess so you never know. I appreciate the comments by Bree on the subject. I will think on it.

When W11 was released to the public I installed it on a less important computer and used it for a few weeks with only a few minor grumbles.

I moved my main computer over to W11 a week ago and again have only encountered occasional minor issues. Someone said to me that Windows 11 is actually 10.1 and I generally agree that's how it feels.

My computer is old so it fails on all the W11 suitability checks therefore I had to use work-arounds to install W11.

My wife's computer is less than 2yrs old and proudly displays a green box in the Windows update section announcing that hers is compatible. Despite that, she intends to keep hers on W10 for quite a while longer to allow me time to become familiar with W11 and because she has an AMD processor which I am hearing aren't coping so well with W11.

If you make a system image with Macrium Reflect Free before you try, then you can easily go back to your W10 if you don't like W11.

In addition to backups and images, I cloned the hard drives onto an unused one before changing to W11. I intend to keep the W10 clones for a few months at least.
