If you need a new SSD, then it's worth a look at buying direct from Samsung's own site. They have some good discounts right now, like this one I have just ordered.

I though there was supposed to be a chip shortage pushing up prices. A sale was the last thing I expected....

I was reading the other week that SSD's are one of the few 'shortages' that no longer apply and to expect discounting to return to something near pre-covid levels.
Hopefully it spreads to other areas...

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised and took advantage of it to do an HDD > SSD upgrade I've wanted to do for a long time, but been put off by the prices

Your post prompted me to look at external USB SSDs.

2TB external SSD, USB 3.1 £37 on Amazon, is that typical? If that's the case, I'm amazed.

For external drives, do you guys prefer traditional HDD or more up to date SSD.

That sounds like a 'fake' SSD. They've got 'sponsored ads' running on Amazon currently despite hundreds of people reporting them.
They look like Samsung T5's and report as 2TB or greater but are in fact USB cases with SD cards or USB drives inside them with modded firmware to fool the PC into misreading them...BARGE POLE!

I like USB 3 caddys and then I can add \ swap SSD disks as wanted.

If you've got a desktop the icy style front bays are good as they give you removable SATA capability meaning you could swap boot/ data/ backup drives around as needed.

FWIW Scan have 1TB Crucials for £60.97 with nominal performance within 10% of the Samsungs, and WD with the same nominal performance for £68.48 (albeit currently out of stock)
