Wi-fi calling

#615604

Postby MrFoolish » September 18th, 2023, 10:47 am

I've always been interested in wi-fi calling as my mobile signal at home is prone to dropping out.

Unfortunately my carrier (Tesco mobile) and my phone didn't support it.

But now I have a new phone and "wi-fi calling" is appearing on the status bar. It seems Tesco mobile have now added this feature.

I'm just curious to ask if anyone knows if it can switch seamlessly mid-call?

If you Google 'What is Wi Fi calling?' it suggests that provided you have enabled it on your phone then it should switch seamlessly if your mobile signal drops out. Obviously you need a wi fi connection and it will use a modest amount of data. I too am interested which is why I looked it up.

I am sure others can give you a more technical answer (and possibly a more accurate one)

Seems so:

Even during a call, your phone will automatically switch to 4G Calling as you move out of range of your WiFi coverage to allow your call to continue. The 4G indicator at the top of your phone screen will show during a call when you are using 4G Calling.
If you leave WiFi coverage and your phone cannot find a 4G mobile signal, your call will drop and you will need to restart the call somewhere with WiFi or Mobile coverage.

Check with your specific network/MVNO provider to see what they offer in terms of two way roaming. i.e WiFi - 5/4G....5/4G - WiFi.

As new services become available like eSIM they don't all suddenly switch at the same time, it gets rolled out at different rates, quite often to the full fat (£££) business orientated accounts first (as a price differentiator) and the budget MVNO one's last.
