how many presses?

I have a universal remote control, which I want to use with a TEAC micro hifi system. It needs programming to set the IR codes of the hifi.

The instructions say, press SET and the device name simultaneously, red light starts flashing, then press SET and then press POWER.
What I'm assuming this is doing, is outputting its different codes one by one, and each time you press POWER, hoping that one of the presses turns the hifi on or off. That shows its got the code, and then you check that volume up/down etc work on the remote.

I've now pressed the POWER button about 200 times and haven't found the code yet. DAK how many times I may have to do this?

My admittedly limited experience suggests that with your universal remote control, you should (may?) have had a list of coded for various manufacturers. That might help.
Otherwise, it could be a lot - 3 digits = 1000 codes! And I believe some are 4 digit codes.

Good luck,

The one thing I have come to understand about universal remote controls is that they are universally useless.

It depends on what type of universal remote.
Some of them require a 3 or 4 digit code entered to tell it what device to control, and others are learning remotes, where you point the original remote at the learning remote and press the appropriate button.

Which universal remote is it?

Its has four modes - one where you can input a code if known, quick search mode, auto search mode (which is what I've previously described) and display mode (which is to show you the code it settled on.

Naturally, I'd prefer to input a code - DAK the code for a TEAC Micro hi-fi system DX40DAB please? Only TEAC code I found in my searches was 608, which doesn't work.

Mine has worked great for 3 years. It should as it cost about five hundred quid. It's a MX-980. I love that it's rechargeable and that it is non-directional so you can operate it from the next room if you want.

BUT, if anything goes wrong with it I would have to call in the installer. Stuff has become way too complicated.

Are you supposed to hold the power button for as long as it takes to find the code? Might you be starting from the same place in the list of possibles every time you press for a short time?
