Skype

Postby shadowside » January 11th, 2018, 6:56 am

I use Skype quite a lot and really like it.

It now seems to have upodated to some fancy new version which is worse than useless

Is there any way of getting the old version back?

Are you using it on a tablet, phone or PC? Android, iOS, Windows or what?

Scott.

I don't believe that you can, not without a faff anyway. There are sites (not sure how reputable they are though!) that you get previous versions on, but they won't work. You'll get the "can't connect to skype" error when you try to sign in.
This article offers a solution if you can cope with the faff:

Messenger or Whatsapp are two that I've used to make calls.

Loads, but it's what the people you want to communicate with have that is important, as the apps tend to be proprietary.

So despite the interface being horrible now I've stuck with Skype on the desktop PC and mobile, but have others like FB Messenger etc. (which get used occasionally for VoIP.)

Its really frustrating. All I want is the simple person to person videoconferencing system that Skype used to be. There must be millions like me. What on earth was Microsofts motivation in turning Skype into the monster it now is? Why is there no obvious replacement? There must be a huge gap in the market.

MS also bought Linkedin.
There are obvious synergies with Skype.

They are trying to turn Skype into a 'corporate' service allied to other cloud services (presumably so that they can charge for them), but in their infinite wisdom have ruined much of what was good about it before...

The other option with Skype is to use the browser based web version (webRTC) rather than the desktop app. which has a far more familiar interface much like the old desktop one.

When I am logged into my Outlook.com account(s) I get an expandable vertical Skype bar option to the right on any of the various pages.(Email/calendar/people/office online et al).

I have different Skype accounts to match the various Outlook.com accounts with unique contacts lists.
I don't 'link' my contacts databases either with each other or social media accounts like FB or Twitter, so each account shows only relevant contacts.
(I did 'link' them as an experiment once, horrible, never again...)

Eventually found the old version of Skype had not been uninstalled so uninstalled new Skype and opened up old one. Very relieved. Now just need to find how I stop it installing new one again.

Also see here

As others have said thought it's about what the people you want to connect with us as much as what you want to use.

In the Microsoft Store app 'settings' turn 'auto updates' off.
Then you can manually download only the app updates you want.
That's the way I have it set up.

Where was it?

I only find the 'new' version in W10 menu and this new version does not display any of my original contacts or calls.

Loads of critical comments on this and other aspects of the new version on the Windows feedback hub.

The old version of Skype was still present in my apps list.

What seems to have happened, although I dont understand how, is that a clean installation of "new" skype had taken place and taken over the Skype icon, rather than an update, leaving the old version in place.

I have always declined the offer to upgrade and don't understand where new version came from..........which is worrying in itself.

I have switched off automatic updates within skype ( Tools, options, advanced, turn off) but there was a warning at the bottom that microsoft updates can update Skype. Don't really want to turn windows updates off.

Not in mine. :-(

I have re-installed classic Skype from the downloads page:-
https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/

Select 'Get classic Skype' from the drop-down (page default is 'Skype from store' and that just gets the new version).

Logged in and all my contacts are back.

If the desktop version of Skype is on your Windows computer, you’re vulnerable to a really nasty exploit. A flaw in Skype’s update tool could give attackers full control over your system, and Microsoft says there isn’t going to be a fix any time soon.

Happily, you can avoid the problem completely by replacing the “desktop” version of Skype with the one available from the Microsoft Store. Still, it’s embarrassing for Microsoft’s own software to have a weakness this fundamental, and the exploit in question is one Redmond has warned other developers about multiple times.
