There must be other roofing contractors in your area. Is there nobody you can ask for a recommendation ?
When I'm stuck for a recommendation I usually talk to my lettings agents who manage hundreds of properties and would very likely have a coup!e of roofing firms who do stuff for them regularly.

This isn't roofing - it is recladding and reroofing a tinber garage/workshop.

Probably not best described in the OP now I look back, as it also requires new doors making.

The quotes we had were from a local chippie and a couple of timber building people, and this chap was the best mix of price and confident about what was required re the new onduline metal roof.

They are unlikely to require any payment 5 months in advance.

Just to finish this off - the contractor did get back.

The cladding we are using is not his normal 'rebated featheredge' (we wanted T&G shiplap) and he struggled to get it (!) so needs to order it whilst it is in stock. We are also havin a metal Onduline roof, which needs to be cut to size and pre-paid.

He's agreed enough now to cover the cladding which he will order and store, and the rest to 50% 6 weeks prior to start date to cover the roofing.

That sounds satisfactory all round because he seems happy and you are more or less guaranteed to get the job done. Good outcome.
