GU10 halogen (?) bulb replacements

#197557

Postby AleisterCrowley » January 30th, 2019, 11:48 am

The kitchen end of my kitchen lounge (rented property) has six small spots - now down to one operational as they have been failing recently!
I've extracted one and it is marked;
DIALL 240V 40W GU10 41264 15W06
300lm 2750K 36°
.
For longevity and economy I would like to replace with LED near equivalents. There is no dimmer, so non-dimmable fine
There seem to be plenty of options on Amazon - any recommendations/warnings ?
Assume everything would be CE compliant??
looking at;

Check out https://www.ledhut.co.uk/spot-lights/gu ... bulbs.html

Their guarantee and loans policy is excellent, though the GU10s we've got from them have given no problems.

I will say, Mrs S and I find that the Warm White to be a better experience than the Cool White, though our son isn't bothered by the harshness of the cool white.

+1 for LED Hut. Good quality stuff. Slarti's point about warm white is good, though - it all depends on your taste. Some people want their kitchens to be surgically bright, and others prefer a bit of an old-fashioned glow.

You can get a very wide range of colour characteristics these days. You just need to know your Kelvins. This link ought to help: https://www.thelightingsuperstore.co.uk ... emperature

"Near equivalent" means something which has similar light output (lm = lumens), and similar colour temperture (2700k = Warm white).

Your first choice (Philips) is 2700k, and 355lm which means it will have the same "warmth" and will be brighter than the old bulb.

The second choice (LOHAS) is 6000k (will look cold and stark), and 500lm which means you will end up with a room which will be brighter but "look" colder.

Using a "colder" or "bluer" light (e.g. 3000k, 3300k or higher) might work, but it depends on the room, and personal preference, and would definitely look different. If you don't get this colour temperature thing, then pay a visit to Wilkos where they usually have a display box showing different temperature bulbs.

I'm probably going to opt for the Philips ones - pack of six so I can change out the whole lot in one go (the Led Hut ones seem to have a price reduction at 20 units so if they last 15000 hours I'll be wasting money)
I was wondering if the 6000K would be too harsh - I also have 3 cold white downlights under my kitchen cupboards

6000K is quite harsh - a definite touch of blue. My new desk/floor lamp is selectable between 3000 and 6000K (because it's got 60 LED components of varying temperatures), and I find that 5000K is about as white as I really want it to be - OTOH, anything much quieter than 4000K seems a little dim. Cosy, yes, maybe even a little seductive! Depends entirely on what you see yourself using your kitchen for. ;)

Maybe invest in some warm soft supplementary lights for the room? Or just go for 4500K at high lumens and get a compatible dimmer, of course. Might save a lot of faff.

A dimmer with a filament bulb will allow you to change the light output AND change the colour temperature (less light but warmer, more light but bluer).

AFAIK, A dimmer with an LED bulb will only allow the light level to be changed - the colour doesn't change.

If you want to change brightness and colour then you need a lamp with multiple individually controllable LEDs, usually with a remote control.

I want to keep it simple (and cheap!!)
The 2750K halogens seemed to be Ok
Obviously in a rented place I can't fiddle too much/install dimmers
Waste of time anyway as I'm the only one here - I never entertain guests. I've only got one plate...

Put this one on your reading list, sir: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Superpig-Gentl ... 0354040227 . 43 years since publication, and still the ultimate style bible for today's rogue male. Yours for £1.53.

PS: Rushton went to the same school (Malvern) as your eponymous other. Coincidence? I think not.

I have this one, which is probably similar (although US-centric of course, with talk of jello and skillets..)

Didn't realise Rushton went to Malvern, I'd always assumed he was at Shrewsbury with the Private Eye bunch...
The only other old Malvernian(?) I know of is James Jesus Angleton, one of the founders of the CIA.

PJ O'Rourke is one of my best hopes for the collective sanity of the American people. Waaaaaay too far ahead of most of them, but what a mind.

Read Rushton for the infamous Nepali chilli recipe. Or for his entirely probable advice on cooking for seduction. or his timeless advice to bachelors everywhere: "Never befridge bananas. They go black and frighten the neighbours."

I have 6 Minisun GU10s in the kitchen purchased off Amazon and these have now been there several years, with no failures. Which is a big improvement on the different brand that preceded it.

I had 2 failures of B&Q Diall branded LED bulbs over the winter, so will not be buying B&Q brand light bulbs again.

I ended up replacing the halogens with 6 x 'Philips LED Classic 4.6 W GU10s' for c £14 -
They are working fine so far: good light, run cool, and the full six use less power than one of the old halogens

I bought the same brand from Screwfix and had a lot of failures. The ones from Toolstation are much more reliable and about the same price.

The halogen GU10s I replaced were Diall brand - they had all gone within 5 months of my moving in (obviously don't know how long they had been there...)
