Using a led-compatible dimmer switch with halogen lights

#210373

Postby MyNameIsUrl » March 26th, 2019, 12:05 pm

I understand that when fitting dimmable led bulbs that a led-compatible dimmer switch must be used.

My question is will the led-compatible dimmer switch be suitable for halogen lights?

The reason is, I currently have a 2-gang dimmer switch controlling incandescent wall lights and halogen ceiling lights; I'm replacing the wall lights with dimmable led bulbs, and assuming that a led-compatible 2-gang dimmer switch will have both circuits led-compatible, one of which will be used for the halogen lighting.

Edit: I just looked a switch on ledhut to find it has a rating of 100W - my halogens total 320W!

You can get higher rated dual-use dimmers than that.

One example here goes to 400W for halogen -

The above is just an example to help with your further investigations.

My understanding is that LED compatible dimmers (providing their rating is at least about 125% of their load) would be compatible with halogen lamps (which are also incandescent by the way).
