Problem with a power shower

#26116

Postby Loir » January 25th, 2017, 3:55 pm

We have a Triton AX2000ST. It is getting more and more difficult.
Sometimes when I switch it on in the morning it makes a whining noise and only a little water comes out. I can get it to go by turning to fully cold and then fully hot, then the water finally comes through properly.
It is intermittent but getting more frequent.
The other thing it does is drip for 10 minutes after being switched off. It didn't do this when it was new.
Any ideas?

If you mean a Triton AS2000XT then there isn't much to go wrong according to
https://www.tritonshowers.co.uk/power-s ... pares=true

Some of the spares prices are laughable (£11+ for a three way choc bloc, £9+ for a "commissioning link").
Good luck...

A whining noise and little water throughput might mean an airlock. Depends on your plumbing layout whether this is likely. The dribbling sounds as though the outlet solenoid may be dirty/worn/scaled up.

Depending again on your plumbing the two could be related if the water is able to drain back down the inlet pipe(s) due to the loss of sealing effect. Looking at the layout diagram it seems that with a positive inlet pressure it would drip constantly if the solenoid failed to seal.

I have arranged for a Triton guy to come next Tuesday. It is under guarantee so will not cost anything.

That's fortunate!

I hope you'll post here what the diagnosis turned out to be. I don't have one of these but like the old Fool did I'm sure this forum will become a fund of helpful tips.

This sounds so familiar. My friend is a plumber. He fitted a power shower for me in my rental flat. He derived hot and cold from the low pressure side (rather than having cold at mains pressure and hot at gravity pressure). All I got was a whining before it finally, almost grudgingly, kicked in.

Much deliberation. All manufacturer's instructions had been followed. Phone call to them.

Air was getting in to the pump somehow, but after several experiments it was fairly baffling to all how this could be happening.

The solution to the problem was twofold.

First my friend fitted a Sussex Flange, which has two water outlets, to the top of my tank. One, shielded from air bubbles, to feed the power shower, the other for all other hot water (including taps and overflow).

The other measure was to take said power-shower feed from the Sussex Flange and plumb it half a meter downwards then half a meter back upwards to the shower pump.

These two measures, as suggested by the manufacturers, have completely solved my shower-whining issues.

Regards,
Chris

A classic plumbing goof which I once had in a previous house was to route low-pressure piping upwards and then down again (to wherever). Pretty well guaranteed that any entrained air separating out would find a handy place to settle from where it was difficult to dislodge.

Thank you for that Quelquod. I have just checked and it has been installed with the pipes going up from the cylinder level then down to the shower. I will point this out to the Triton guy when he comes. I don't know how it can be fixed without undoing the whole shower enclosure.

I will keep you all informed.

The Triton man came to fix shower.
He found that there were two plugs missing from the lower water inlets so it sucked in air. Bad installation!
He replaced the plugs and no problems so far.

Thanks for the update. These missing plugs, are they on the actual shower unit itself, or elsewhere?

Thanks,
Chris

Probably item 2 on the diagram at https://www.tritonshowers.co.uk/power-s ... pares=true which appear to be located on the underside of the mixer module inside the shower.

Oh right, thanks John, that makes sense. I'm a bit surprised that water does squirt out if these are missing. Maybe using an alternate inlet somehow blocks them off a bit anyway?

A good result.
Did the Triton man whinge at a warranty call-out to fix a poor installation?

csearle,

The two inlets have one way valves in them according to the manual.

quelquod,

Did the Triton man whinge at a warranty call-out to fix a poor installation?

No, I had the impression he would be complaining to the company that installed it. He took several photos of the valves before and after the plugs were inserted.
