i have a double built in oven.
When switching on or off the top oven it regularly throws the main switch on the consumer unit off.
There is never an issue with the lower oven.
I'll assume I have a faulty oven and will need to replace the whole unit.
Any other opinions ?
I am waiting for my Sparky to come around and investigate.

It could be a faulty element, switch or thermostat, all of which should be easily fixed.

Re: Oven fault
I would replace the element before I did anything else.
I had an oven that tripped the RCD after a few seconds. When disconnected we couldn't find the fault. It simply wasn't there!
What was happening was that the insulation on the element was failing as the element got hot, allowing current to flow to earth. That tripped the RCD (sometimes thought of as the main switch).
A new element is quite cheap and IMHO they tend to be easy to replace.

Re: Oven fault
I would guess that there's about a 95% chance it is the element. Usually an easy fix. If it is a fan oven, check that the fan runs ok as a faulty fan can cause the element to overheat.

If, when the OP says 'regularly throws the main switch of the consumer unit off', it also means that the main switch on the consumer unit has an in-built RCD, then I'd certainly agree that the element is the most likely culprit, and it sounds like a short to earth has occurred in the element.
I've had good results from using these guys for spare elements in the past, as a very satisfied customer with no other connection -
