Outdoor junction box

A new outside light has a built-in cable about half a metre long which necessitates an outdoor junction box (the wire cannot be threaded through the wall). Can anyone please recommend a simple product?

Wiska boxes seem simple to use compared to Screwfix’s which need extra accessories, but all the options seem to be a rather unsightly 3-inch-square box. Unless there’s a smaller, neater product to connect two wires together, I’d appreciate anyone’s experience of a simple-to-use outdoor junction box.

My only personal experience has been with the chunky three inch square boxes - but then, I was connecting an armoured cable to the lamp at the time, and besides, I wanted the connection to be switched. A Wiska box is a very cheap and easy to install solution.

If you want something smaller/neater there are inline IP rated connectors commonly used for pond pumps and the like, like screwfix product 92911

Search for "IP68 connector" and you'll find loads of options. Note IP68 is suitable for immersion in a pond, so should stay watertight

Thanks. I think the pond pump connectors look a bit ‘unconventional’ to be mounted on a wall, so it’ll probably have to be a box. I’ve just spent a long time reading screwfix reviews and questions about glands not fitting knockouts so I’m just looking for a simple-to-use single product.

Wiska boxes are the standard, but they do do smaller ones, which can often be attached to the wall directly behind the light fitting to make them less conspicuous. C.

Maybe it would be simpler just to replace the short cable to the lamp with a longer one that will simply run through the wall? I'd put money on it that your half-metre cable runs to an old-fashioned connector block inside the lamp - and yeah, a small one at that.

The ones with their own cable are notoriously difficult to get into. Some models come without a cable but with a compression gland and miniscule cylindrical junction piece. I think I'd still put a small Wiska box up there though. It would make life easier if you ever need to change the fitting or introduce a PIR or additional lights. Just stick it as close behind the light fitting as you can get it, no-one looks up there anyway. C.

Doesn’t that still need cable glands?
