Cabinet Hinges

I've just had a kitchen cabinet door hinge break. The hinge is about 30 years old and labelled Salice 2A7. Where can I get a replacement hinge? Ideally one that simply slots in to the existing hole.

Are these things pretty standard? There's a used Salice 2A7 on ebay (though it looks slightly different to mine) or would I be better off buying a newer version?

Thanks, though I'm still not entirely sure that that's the correct one. How do I know if mine has a short arm? Or a positive 45 degree angle (whatever that is!)? It has however made me realise that the 2A7 one on ebay is not necessarily of the same vintage as mine, so may not be compatible.

I'll try sending a photo of what I've got to Salice, to see what that say.

That particular one is a 45° one for a corner cabinet — this type of thing, https://mhcustom.com/kitchen-corner-cabinet-storage-solutions/.

Most kitchen cabinet hinges are of this general type: https://www.screwfix.com/p/blum-steel-sprung-concealed-hinges-110mm-2-pack/14286. They are full overlay (the door {almost} covers the edges of the sides of the carcase when it is closed) and open a little more than 90°. Ones that open further may be used for 90° corner cabinets to allow better access. Using a different brand is not normally a problem (although I would not mix brands on the same door, just in case they hinge differently). You would need to change the backplate if you change the brand but it is just two screws each.

The screw holes in the backplates are a standard distance apart, and the 35mm hole in the door is standard. The screw hole positions in the door can vary but this isn't normally a problem. A bit of soap (dry, from a bar) or candle wax, crayon or whatever helps the screw go into the MDF door.

The backplate fixings can be one of three types:
Normal wood screws;
M6 screws that need a 5mm pre-drilled hole, https://www.screwfix.com/p/zinc-plated-hinge-screws-m6-x-16mm-100-pack/89259;
Screws with plastic dowels, https://www.debonairjoineryproducts.co.uk/product/blum-hinge-knock-in-plastic-expansion-dowels-8-or-10-mm-with-screws/.

The M6 screws do not fit backplates designed for the other types (or are very tight).

Thanks so much for that explanation Julian, it's a bit clearer now. My existing backplate appears to use M6 screws, so I'm hoping that if I choose the same make I may be able to retain the existing backplate. There seems to be a vast number of different hinges though, but hopefully Salice will be able to advise on the correct sort if I send them some pics.

Screwfix do a range of different sized hinges. They also do a hinge repair plate which is really useful if the wood where the hinge fixes into is damaged, which inevitably happens with old doors.

Good idea. A trick I learnt from the days of TMF was to use saw dust with decorators PVA.
