Shame you can't make this one TJH - I'm sure we'll have another in 'early' 2019 :-)

School reunion ? I go out of my way to avoid most of my former school acquaintances...

Unlikely that there will be more than one of my era, AC. And he is doubtful - he hasn't booked yet. It's more a matter of supporting the organiser, who has done a good job of getting the younger element there. I see a gap of 18 years between me and the next oldest who have booked so far.

Chris

So what would be the normal way?
Well normally AleisterCrowley (AC) or I have a moan on an unrelated board about the length of time since the last meet-up. One or other of us (usually he) starts a laborious conversation on Lemon Socials about which day and whether Friday is so bad after all. Whatever day is suggested someone pops up and says they can't make it. Punctuated by periods of silence this repeats itself until we are all thoroughly fed up and just declare a day by cloning some archaic, cobwebby post he crafted an age ago.

Once a couple of us just said we'd meet up, just the the two of us if need be, and declared, with no discussion, the date.

Both these methods have had moderate success.

This time our AC lighted on the idea of a poll (which seems suspiciously sensible - I wonder if his squeeze gained access to his account). I am delighted to see that at the moment four Lemons can still make last Friday!

Anyway with top-brass coming along I'm hoping for a good turn out!

I have been sadly squeeze-less for a couple of years now- (cue violins, hoping for 'sympathy pint')

I will indeed clone one of my older announcements posts tomorrow - carefully changing the relevant bits (like the DATE...)
Remind me, if I forget. Those beastly work people keep expecting me to do something. It's awful

Ok, im 97% coming, just need to secure a bed and a train ticket and a day off work. The hard part is done.

so where are we meeting?

And what time? And how many are coming?
Does it need another poll to count attendance?
Roll call....

All will become clear when I post the notification TOMORROW :)

But, it'll be the same as the previous socials, just the date changes...

You've changed the thread name - I was going to do a separate post to make sure the details were at the top...

Anyway, it was going to look like this;

LEMON FOOL LONDON AUTUMN SOCIAL
There will be an informal gathering of Lemon Fools (and friends) near Regent St/Oxford Circus on the 16 November. All welcome ! It’s a social evening rather than being ‘investment focused’, although we do occasionally discuss investing….

*******
When: FRIDAY 16 November 2018. 'After work' (5.00pm onwards) to closing time (11.30pm)
Where: The Clachan, 34 Kingly Street, London W1B 5QH

*******
Directions:
Oxford Circus tube is the closest. On exiting the tube, head SOUTH down Regent St towards Piccadilly Circus. Take the second left after about 600ft (a short amble) into Gt Marlborough St. Almost immediately on your right, before the mock Tudor façade of Liberty London, is an archway which is Kingly Street (more alley than street). The Clachan is on the left a short distance down .
If you get lost ask for directions to Liberty.

How to find the Fools:
Some of us will be wearing Lemon Fool badges. We are often outside - 'behind the line' against the wall
It is quite a busy pub, but there’s normally space in the back/outside and it does thin out a bit as the evening progresses and the after work crowd head home

Food:
If you need food get something on the way, or order in the Clachan. They have a pretty reasonable menu and food in Nicholson’s pubs is normally good. You might have trouble finding a table though.

EMERGENCY PLAN B----
If the Clachan is closed due to unforeseen circumstances (fire, flood, locusts) I suggest a retreat to The Blue Posts (18 Kingly St) which is a short way beyond the Clachan on the left. No idea what it’s like, but it’s a pub. I will try to post ON THIS BOARD if we have to change venue [unlikely]
(I have shamefully copied a lot of the above from my last TMF Social post... let me know if there are any errors or inconsistencies)

See you there I hope!

This is a good price for London. £74.50 at Kings Cross at time of posting. Others around the same price in different areas.

Why not book a table?

If people are;
(a) definitely turning up
(b) eating
- booking a table is an option, You can do so online for up to six people.
It would tend to split the attendees into eaters and non-eaters, which may not be a good idea if we get the average 10-15 turnout.
The Clachan doesn't have any large table areas in the 'drinking' part, and as far as I know it's not possible to book for 'general use' rather than a set mealtime (happy to be corrected)

Table sounds good or is it possible to find a venue with a free or inexpensive function room. Maybe I'm being a bit selfish because my hearing isn't great with a lot of background pub noise!

Not easy in central London on a Friday, particularly at this late stage. Outside is quiet (ish) but may be too cold at this time of year. The rear section of the pub is fine, and seems to clear a bit as the night goes on
My high frequency hearing isn't 100% (too many loud bands) and I find it ok.

Impossible to find a function room I'm afraid, they all require about £500 min spend.

As AC says, we tend to stand outside where the background noise isn't so bad - I am the same though, I struggle in even only mildly noisy environments (must see the GP...). By about 7.30pm people start wandering off home and it gets quieter and then we can go in and find a table. But it's actually a pretty small pub - hard to find one with much room at all really.

This one has a bit of room and is on several levels, so if you get there at a reasonable time you can monopolise an area (dreadful website!):

https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/pubs/ ... ntent=7887

No idea if it meets the required beer standards, I know nothing about beer and that seems to be the main driver for these events.

It's right opposite St James Park tube, so v easy to find (as long as you come out the right exit....).

Probably too late in the day to discuss switching pubs for this social - but we should discuss alternatives for the next one
The great thing about the Clachan is it's very accessible from all points of the compass - Oxford Circus is a single leg journey from lots of mainline stations.
I'm a bit lukewarm about hiring function rooms etc. As a 'newbie' at the Motley Fool socials at the Grafton Arms (years ago) I found the separate upstairs area a bit intimidating. It might work with 50+ attendees but the socials (TMF, and latterly TLF) barely get into double figures these days.

I can't see any benefit at all in hiring function rooms, especially when it's easier to nail jelly to a wall than to get people to confirm they are attending!
