Demise of the Fool Discussion Boards (was Fool Death)

#13126

Postby Urbandreamer » December 7th, 2016, 9:29 pm

Ok, I am not the one that should be posting this.

No really I should not.
I joined the fool in the early 90's an fell out with them about 2015, though I still continued posting.
I think early 2016 was what I though was the final straw. I didn't even read why my post had been removed I simply removed my short-cut.

Today (7/12/16) I relented and visited them again, and found that they have not just taken against me! No they have "moved on". No more "Educate, amuse and enrich", more "this is what the wise tell you"!

It makes me very sad.

Like I say I'm not the one that should be posting this. I did my time in the bear pit that was LOST. I believed that it was OK to respond to others who asked questions about pensions on HYP. However I left, because of those things. They didn't have to close the boards because I felt those things.

I do hope that Lemon Fool grows.

You've got it in one. The whole reason they closed the Fool boards was to make sure you could never darken their doors again.

Seriously, I suspect that quite a lot of us have felt like chucking it all in, at least for a while, after getting bruised in an altercation. Some of us have deserved a bit of a flaming, and some have not. One reason why I never went anywhere near LoST was that I realised all too clearly how easy it can be to get sucked into a war of vitriol by somebody who isn't prepared to give any ground at all on a completely unacceptable point of view. Why, I expect they'd say the same thing about me.

The biggest reason for stopping posting, IMHO, is that you've suddenly got a lot more hours in the day for (ahem) "more useful pursuits" . When the Fool closed its boards, I thought seriously about taking advantage of the break and staying 'signed off' so as to have more time for music, exercise and all those other things I should be doing instead of arguing with people and sometimes trying to make them laugh. Doesn't seem to have worked out that way...

Congratulations on having spent nearly twelve months out of the loop! The best I ever seem to manage is twelve hours. Looks like there's no hope for me at all, then.

It was only recently that I realised how little I really missed LoST. Apart from when I visit my Mother, I haven't watched soaps for over 20 years. I think that LoST had become for me a bit like a soap. The same people shouting, arguments on the sidelines etc. Maybe some can take it, but for someone who still wonders what happened to Dirty Den or Crossroads, I'm glad to be rid of it. Let's move on and embrace civilised discussion.

Naturally, the conspiracy theorist in me is thinking about all the little tricks that people will pull to derail our forum. But we're better than that, aren't we? :-)

I was a fool free boards contributor when I was in the UK at the turn of the century and sometime between then and now I moved to Australia. I loved the Fool back then. It was education. Then they started down the line of 'comparing' credit cards. There was always the fear that they would shut the boards. It's all about control.

And now they are fully in control. Here in Australia you have a MF that offers share tipping through their services. I won't bother you with the details. When you join one of them you get access to a forum accompanying the particular paid service you have a subscription with. To be honest it's a bit of a joke. Many of them are no better than MF cheerleaders, cheering on every decision by analysts.

When I recently went looking for the UK Fool Boards I dismayed to find them at last mothballed. I knew it would happen one day. The silver lining is Lemon Fool. It is an antidote to the pernicious marketing and snake oil that masquerades as education.

I suspect The Lemon Fool will, like The Motley Fool boards before it, be a reflection of its posters. You have to be of a certain character to gravitate here and then stay. Chris

Hi Chris
Unless I am wrong, the mainstay of the Fool Forums, were savvy gentlefolk who knew to look past Corporate Motley Fool and its increasingly aggressive marketing of share tipping subscriptions. I'm not saying that some of those Fools who ran the services were ace dudes who had some financial gumption; only the whole business had gone increasingly astray from how I used to experience it, way back.

I'm more of a lurker / voyeur than a poster but I do sometimes get sucked into reading the so-called 'Polite Discussions' board. Probably because it's so prevalent on the new posts lists. I really shouldn't. I absolutely abhor some of the views on there to the point where I think - why am I reading this site? This is not me. I should move away from here.

I'm not an investor, not interested in shares. I found the Fool many years ago and enjoyed the banter in GOM, the Snug and the generosity and wealth of helpful (mostly!) and informative information posted in DAK.

In my opinion 'Polite Discussions' should be shut down, or at the very least renamed to 'Here Be Dragons'. Either that, or introduce an option so that users can hide it from view and pretend it doesn't exist.

Do you mean some of the topics, or some of the views within those discussion topics?

IIRC there was some discussion amongst the mods as to whether Polite Discussions should be introduced or not. The owners of the site wanted it provided the discussions could be kept polite. At one point this was not possible and the whole thing was locked down with a warning for several days to allow the participants a period of reflection. That could just as easily have seen the abolition of it, but another chance was given.

Regards,
Chris

I quite like (so called) polite discussions. There is a lot of arguments, some of which are certainly not polite, but, really, anyone who doesn't like it can easily ignore the posts, the thread or the board.

I really think there is a place for it in that poster can let of a bit of steam, be argued against, and, just maybe, have their view changed.

Sometimes I get a bit irritated with come of the comments made, but then I calm down and ignore them. I do this with some of the poster too.

If you think about it, it is little different to a discussion in a pub where things get heated and comments made that are not exactly described by the word 'polite', and, at least the moderators are here if they stray too far.

Please let it be! Some of us like a 'bun fight' particularly if we are not involved.

I don't know about 'Demise'. When it comes to Polite Discussions we sadly seem to be seeing the full resurrection of TMF LoST.

We have, perhaps inevitably, pretty well from the off had: "All things Labour/Left are irrevocably evil and bad". We have now acquired the: "Bash the BBC - That Socialist hoard determined to undermine civilisation as we know it" thread.

All we need now is the: "We are doomed! - The Muzzies are going to murder us all in our beds" to complete the LoST 'Hat Trick'. :(

I think this sort of public bulletin board, especially one that's been developed to cater for an existing 'ex-TMF' audience as it stood when TMF was closed down, needs somewhere like 'Polite Discussions', if for no other reason than to be able to say 'take that sort of stuff over there please...' when it needs to be said...

I'd try to think of it like that 'drinkers-pub' that all home-towns have. The very fact that it exists means that there's somewhere for the people who enjoy going there to congregate and exist with like-minded individuals. It's not ideal, but at least you know where it is, and know to either keep out of it, or to simply embrace it.....

If you closed the place down, the patrons would simply spread out to other areas of the town, causing grief for many other users of many other pubs, who were happy when the pub was still open and just kept out of it...

Just my opinion, but having 'Polite Discussions' is the least-worst solution, I think, and people who are easily-offended should simply try to avoid the board if that's the case.

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

They are not so much "examples" as illustrations, by way of parody. Though not that far from reality!

It was me who suspended Polite Discussions board a while back. If it degenerates again we are quite prepared to close it permanently. As far as I am aware it has settled down but I don't read it daily. However it seems to be causing less hassle than it did.
