Contrasting feelings

#176503

Postby Sussexlad » October 26th, 2018, 9:09 pm

Not really seeking comfort, just expressing how contrary life can be.

For some months my wife had a swelling in her tummy, which slowly limited her ability to enjoy food, though she still had a appetite. She's just had an operation to remove two sizeable cysts and of course the fear was that they were malignant. Well we were really relieved to learn they weren't and this evening I had the great pleasure of watching her sat by her hospital bed, enjoying a curry, followed by some rice pudding, her first proper meal for months.

However, when I arrived home there was a phone call from my sister, saying her son has finally succumbed to the cancer he's been fighting off for several years and naturally she's heartbroken! She then ask how my wife was?

I hope you told her, quietly and without too much fizz, and then changed the subject back to her again. Even in the depths of despair about losses to cancer, the bereaved can draw comfort from the knowledge that other people have been spared the same torment. Well, that's been my experience, anyway.

She's going to need your support now, and - having been that close to the big C worry yourself - you'll be in that much of a better position to understand. Thinking of you both.

Thanks for your thoughts. Indeed I'm very much there for my sister night and day and she knows that. We also lost our son, so have some experience of that too. It just felt so odd to be caught between the joy of our news and the despair she is going through, though it has been going on for so long, that there must also be an element of relief. He was a great example of how to make the best of any available time.
