OH redundant

It has finally happened OH has been made redundant, we now stand to lose our home of the last 27 years and also nearly 2/3rds of income, I have no idea what to do.

Hi Lizzie

I'm so sorry to hear this. At least you have made good inroads in the debts, that puts you in a better position.

What are the chances of your OH getting another job?

Thank you Gersemi, this only happened yesterday since then we have been looking for a job in the same line would likely mean moving to another county even if there is any thing going, it is quite hard to find where they are advertised, which would then mean I would need to leave my job. We are both now in our early 50s so I just don't really know how easy it will be. The most difficult thing is going to be finding somewhere to live that will except our animals, we also have two kenneled working dogs that are old now and I think will be impossible to rehome.

Sorry to hear that news. That is tough. I hope he gets a good redundancy payment to tide you over a while - and that he can find a new position.

Not easy news to take.

Hi Clariman, thank you for your words of support, I am lost with what to do at the moment so I have just been canceling some direct debits in order to reduce some costs. We will not know any more until Monday when OH has his meeting, it seems an age away. I seem to swing between panic and tears in the meantime. OH is stoic.

News of less than two months ago: my brother was made redundant, as his employer was taken over and his job merged in to someone else's. Since his missus works part-time, that's the bulk of their income.

News this morning: he starts his new job this week. Same function at a rival company. I'd guess similar remuneration.

Moral: just because you're early 50s (as he is) doesn't mean you're past it :)

To add to UncleE's post. I parted company, aged 50, with an organisation that I had worked for for well over 20 years. 2 months later I started a new job where I ended up earning more for the next 6 years. I also recruited a guy in his 50s in that role - in fact probably 2 of them were in their 50s.

I'm so sorry Lizzy. Being harsh I have to say I'm not surprised OH is 'stoic' because by and large it has been you who has had to deal with money issues and presumably this will continue!

I hope we can help in the days to come with specific issues as you try to find a way forward. At the moment just a slight concern. When you say you are cancelling some Direct Debits is this for optional things which you can give up and therefore don't need to continue to pay for? Or is it for things to which you are committed (whether you want to be or not at this stage) or which are necessities?
