I recall these from the struggles of the Glasgow Rangers football club. Players were being "paid" using these.

It appears to have been more widespread and there's now a crackdown.

Briefly the tax avoidance was by virtue of income for services being paid as a loan. That isn't taxable, but if there's no intention that it be repaid, then the law has been changed to make it so.
