Bond fund fact sheets used to give the average credit quality of bonds held by the fund, but these days we are just as likely to get a breakdown of percentages of each individual credit rating held by the fund, such as 25% aa 50% a 20% bb 5% ccc . So how do we produce a single average credit rating from that information which allows different funds to be compared?
