Apparently as of more recent there's around £50Bn of currency that isn't moving through the system, just seemingly stuffed under mattresses. I guess little wonder when the alternatives pay little more in gross terms, before costs and taxes, perhaps less after. At least the new plastic coating style makes them more durable.

Historically a equal split of £'s, US$ and gold, yearly rebalanced, offset much of UK inflation, reducing it down from something like 4.5% down to 1.7%. Inter-spaced with periodic 'opportune' temporary deployment and it wouldn't have taken much to negate inflation totally. Turn a quick 10% gain a few times each decade, and otherwise sleep high.
