I've inherited an investment trust that's been doing pretty well, but I thought I'd check the charges. I'm not too familiar with IT charges (I know they can be high though).
Can anyone help me interpret these? What is the total percentage charge per year (at least approximately), assuming I don't buy or sell any of it?

Thanks for any help!

How much is this IT charging?
Re: How much is this IT charging?
Hi,
There are many ways to measure charges & fees, I tend to look at the AIC website, for this one the link is https://www.theaic.co.uk/companydata/BYTTC/gearing
You will need to add any platform charges also.

There is with Investment Trusts an attempt to standardise the measurement of costs and in the case of Aberdeen New India, these so called Ongoing Costs are shown as 1.23%, the bulk of which is the management fee charged by Aberdeen at 1%. That seems quite high but it is a small trust at £290 million or so of assets. As a trust grows bigger the charges usually reduce. I would say though, that the costs are probably in the general range that one would expect for a trust of this size.

Gg, I looked at the KID through HL's website, which shows:
Portfolio transactions: 0.19%
Other ongoing costs: 1.24%
Total: 1.43%
The Citywire IT website shows a TER of 1.23%
To me, they would be normal for a trust investing overseas.

Thanks all - good to know it's about 1.23% and that's within normal for this kind of trust.

Why care at all about the charges?
Is the investment doing the job for you? If so, then any charges are pretty irrelevant - think of it as getting what you pay for.
If it isn't doing the job, then dump it - unless you some special 'conviction' about India.

Well, I try to keep them down if I can, but in general I agree. It was just that in this case I wasn't sure what the charges even were

It's always seemed odd to me that some people would prefer to pay a cost of £1 to make £100 rather than a cost of £10 to make £1000.

There are lots of funds, ETFs and ITs out there. Predicting future performance of any of these is a guessing game. Predicting future charges is much less of a guessing game.
