Ugliest car ever?

#462213

Postby Clitheroekid » December 1st, 2021, 12:15 am

I'm old enough to recall a time when BMW's were good-looking, well-engineered cars that many people aspired to own.

They lost a lot of their appeal when they started producing dull, everyday cars, and their styling has been on a steady downhill slope for years now.

But this monstrosity really does take the biscuit for possibly the ugliest, most completely pointless waste of raw materials ever to emerge from a motor manufacturer - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/top ... 963240&i=0

It's no Alfa BAT that's for sure

But it's got a bit to go before it dethrones the Pontiac Aztec (WARNING: do not google for images - very NSFW and offensive motor)
- a car so ugly it made it in to a computer programming book as an example of crappy design (this one: https://www.amazon.com/Code-Complete-Practical-Handbook-Construction/dp/0735619670 careful if you ever open it as there's a picture <shivers!>)
- simultaneously so ugly and boring, that it was used as Walter White's car in Breaking Bad as a symbol for how mediocre and pathetic his life was

So I'll grant you that M looks like an Evoque with a bad body kit - but I think the Aztec's holding on to its biscuits for now

It still has a long way to go to take the 'ugly' crown from this one....

"most completely pointless waste of raw materials "

It's depressing seeing the rise of the enormous over sized SUV on our roads. They take up too much parking space, whether in a car park or on a road, they need more resources and energy to both manufacture and in use than a smaller car. The taxation system needs to target these over-sized vehicles, particularly as car tax cant' get them on fossil fuel engine size/emissions.

Isn't it just a Range Rover Evoque on steroids, with a changed grille?

Jarring though it is, my choice is definitely the SsangYong Rodius...

Closely followed by the Ford Granada/Scorpio...

Famously, the Ford Edsel Villager.

Have to agree about the Bristol, with what looks like Morris Marina door handles. A pity as some of the early Bristols such as the 402 were cars of great beauty.

Sorry to plug my own link, but I just took a second look at this page and noticed a couple of glaringly original touches. Not the least of which was that France's idea of a rugged shooting brake boasted a mighty 1400 cc engine which I gather was capable of 80 bhp. And front wheel drive only. Perfect for the grouse moor in October. (In Britain, by comparison, the Rancho's photoshoots were taken on the double yellow lines outside Harrods, which seemed altogether more probable.)

But back to the grouse moor. The second picture down suggests that maybe a brake on the shooting wouldn't be such a bad idea, given that France has such an unfortunate record for hunting casualties. Is that Prince who's about to blow the private parts off his girlfriend? Don't think you're supposed to point a gun like that, are you?

The 2nd picture down also suggests it's stuck in rut

The pacer at least had useable rear windows, which are now rare as hens teeth.

An excellent selection of `aesthetically challenged" cars. But to be fair most of these were relatively humble cars designed to be functional rather than beautiful (though I happen to like both the Fiat Multipla and the Citroen Dyane).

The BMW is supposed to be a flagship car for BMW, celebrating 50 years of the justly famed M Motorsport division, which has produced some brilliant cars. It's one of the most powerful cars on the road, and is likely to cost over £150k.

I'm guessing the target market is overweight and over-wealthy US citizens, but I sincerely hope that owning one of these monstrosities will become such a badge of crass stupidity and lack of awareness that it will fail miserably.

It's depressing seeing the rise of the enormous over sized SUV on our roads. They take up too much parking space, whether in a car park or on a road, they need more resources and energy to both manufacture and in use than a smaller car.

I couldn't agree more. One of the most nauseating aspects of brutes like this is the greenwashing that's applied to them to give the impression they are somehow compatible with `sustainability' and other ESG buzz words now so beloved of marketeers. It's utterly irrelevant that a 2.5 ton blob is powered by electricity - that's entirely incidental to the huge costs of manufacturing the thing in the first place.

One very negative aspect of electric cars is that they weigh far more than ICE cars, which means they shed far more in rubber and brake dust, both of which are serious pollutants.

I should make it clear that I'm not in any way against high performance cars in principle - there are so few of them that the additional pollution they create is irrelevant. However, the entire concept of an electric high performance car is a contradiction in terms, simply because of the weight factor, which, at least so far, can't be overcome (and, of course, the lack of sound).

An electric car is by definition a compromise, and is designed for one purpose only - to reduce carbon emissions. However, a high performance car design shouldn't be constrained by such irrelevancies - the sole objective should be to engineer the best possible car, and at present that means an ICE car. It's why electric Ferraris are an absurdity, and yet another embarrassing confirmation that the company is very sadly transitioning from being one of the finest motor engineers in the world into a designer brand.

I think there will be more than just my vote for the Fiat Multipla being the most ugly car ever? Or at least of recent times?

Well it won't be getting my vote! I would describe it as quirky rather than ugly.

And as I said in my last post, it was designed to fulfil a function rather than impress the neighbours, and it seems to have achieved that fairly well, so at least it's an honest design. The BMW, on the other hand, is a toxic combination of ugliness, hypocrisy and brutality, and is not only ugly in aesthetic terms but in its entire concept.

What with all the slagging of BMWs
still produce some very nice looking and high quality cars (IMHO) as I have one

I'd agree with that. In fact I'd go further, I think it would be a contender for a 'best designed' award - not a pretty car, but imv very well designed.

I even preferred the original with the frog eyes before they facelifted it and tried to normalise it.

Whoever thinks that the Fial Multipla is an ugly car has obviously not seen how restrained and sophisticated they can sometimes be...
