Re: Insurance due soon....
So much for checking the market at renewal time
My renewal figure from Aviva came in this morning
£40 cheaper than last year and that is also £60 cheaper than the cheapest on Moneysupermarket
btw Saga is over £1,700 more expensive (highest price on Moneysupermarket)

My experience with Direct Line last month was also postive in that they volunteered significant reductions for both my House and car insurance so the new system seems to be working.

I've enjoyed a similar experience on both house and car renewals this month. Saved a bit of hassle.

Re: Insurance due soon....
Pretty much the same here... the 'new customer' deals seemto be suddenly available at renewal. I say it this way, as we've always shopped around, and so have always paid the "new customer" price.
House insurance renewal was about £20 cheaper, bike insurance went up a tenner (although last year was zero NCD!), and MrsF's ageing Toyota was about £3 different to previously, but sadly not below the £100 it was a few years ago (including business use!).
RAC OTOH...

Re: Insurance due soon....
Adrian Flux, my existing insurer for the Land Rover - OK, they're a broker not an insurer - were 12% cheaper than last year.
I didn't have to work it out because they told me so.
I don't remember them telling me the percentage when it went up every year
But my goodness they know how to charge for 'documentation', no reduction there.

There's a charge for documentation?!
Isn't there an option to have the documents emailed to you? At no cost of course.

Indeed they do email it.
But they still charge for someone having sat and typed it.
The 'documentation' or Policy Issuance Fee lark started some years ago. There is also a charge for any amendments.
In the good old days this would all have been paid for by the broker's commission, now they get the commission, plus a fee from the insured.
Perhaps they pinched the idea from auctioneers.

With a quill pen no doubt
I wish I could charge for sitting

Re: Insurance due soon....
Insurance companies, who can fathom out how they decide their premiums.
Today my son came back from college in the US, he is in the UK each year for just five months, during that time he needs transport so I insure him for the car. Last year I did that on a temporary basis while he was here and it worked out cheaper than him being on the policy for the whole 12 months.
Today I logged into my account with my car insurer to add him to the policy from now until he returns to the US in August, about 10 weeks. They would not let me add him a a temporary driver for more than one month at a time, at almost the cost of the current annual premium for that month. For clarity my current annual cost is about £250 and they required an extra £230 in addition to add him for one month! So this would have been an extra £1150 annually for him to use the car for 5 months.
I thought I would check what the cost was of adding him permanently to the policy that has been in place since January. They required just £138 for this...go figure as out American friends might say.

That sums up the insanity of premium calculations
seems as if there is no logcial explanation

and when he returns to the US after a few weeks can you then get a refund on part of that £138 as the full year is "unused" ?
this is same-same-but-different to short term insurance ... whcih in the few times Ive investigated was almost as expensive as a full year for eg a week/month. So the answer would seem to be insure for a year and after the short period is up clsoe the policy and get a refund on it!
