New Reg Plates

#610579

Postby Dod101 » August 23rd, 2023, 10:52 am

Next week sees the adoption of the '73' plates and apparently the DVLA as they always do have banned certain number plates from use. Mind you I think you need a certain sort of mind to see the harm in say BY73SHT.

Writing of which, when I was out yesterday, I noticed a truck with the business name Shyte Shifters on its side. Nothing very subtle about that. They were in the business of emptying septic tanks.

Indeed. There's a local septic tank drainage company near here whose trucks bear such legends as PO05 POT. Damn, if only I could remember some of the others.

The full official list of banned plates for 73 are at https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/consumer- ... s-revealed . I must have a clean mind, because I'm scratching my head about most of them. But those banned for the 23 period included BA23TRD, MU23DER and AA23OLE . ;)

I can see (I think) what those "words" may be if spelled but its a real stretch as to how the use of 23 makes them £replacement" characters and more than any two digit string!

You are, of course, supposing that those numberplates will be rendered in the official Charles Wright font, and not "enhanced" or spaced wrongly. And that the owners won't play silly boggers with black screw caps and suchlike, so as to try and confuse the ANPR cameras. :)

If somebody's drunk enough cider, I suppose it's possible to "create" an R in his sad little mind out of a 2 and a 3. And the human brain is famously willing to overlook letter gaps and wrong or repeated characters in its continual search for meaning. Try googling "typoglycemia". ;)

It doesn't always work out as intended. A local entertainments venue owner christened his car BU57 PUB, which made him sound successful until you considered that it might also be suggesting that his business had gone to the wall. :|

And somebody with a slightly looser mind might have inferred that his venue was frequented by ladies with impressive frontages.

I was quite taken by the quip I saw on a builder’s van “you’ve had the cowboys, now try the Indians” - yep, they were Indians.

which reminds me of a joke…
First born and treasured son of oil rich sheik asks for a racing car set for his birthday.
Dad buys him McLaren.
The next year he wants a construction set.
Gets JCB.
This year he wants a cowboy outfit.
Dad’s planning to buy him Man United. (change team to taste).

On the side of a garden maintenance van I saw 'One man went to Hoe'

What would be the harm in not banning them? It'd save someone a job and maybe give a few people a laugh.

Up to a point, definitely. Just as long as the edgy ones were sold to willing buyers, and not just handed out to unsuspecting owners in the normal way. It can be easier than we think to offend some people: a neighbour we once had was mightily unimpressed when his brand new muscle car was delivered bearing the label WU55.

Then again, some people do court such attention. I remember seeing a very battered 4x4 parked in a hedge in a scruffy layby, bearing the badge D4 UGS. (= "Come and get me if you dare, coppers".) And our local aristocrat has a fair approximation of a fox-hunting cry on his very expensive motor. Careful where you park that car, milord. :?

I think I've mentioned it before, but I'm still amazed that 4 COF and 4 KOF were ever allowed.

I often saw both in a small Derbyshire town, and think one owner has both of them :)
