Not so long ago the self-entitled self-sanctifying cycling lobby were pushing for absolute liability on any driver who hit a cyclist. It's not only e-bikers who think it's OK to ride at night in black clothing with no lights.

I wondered how long it would take for this to be twisted into an anti cycling rant.

I dare say someone might do that, but for me as a (largely former) cyclist who rode for 50+ years but never without lights and would not have dreamed of trying to blame a motorist for anything that was my fault, I'm afraid that no lights+black clothing is just a red rag that reminds me of the cycling fanatics and their strict liability nonsense.

It has always seemed to me that - motorbikes apart - when one is on two wheels, as far as the police are concerned they are not going to bother.

Similarly e-scooters have only been legalised for rental not purchase, not sure why that makes them safer but perhaps makes it easier to withdraw them from the market when problems are found.

I was staying in Cambridge for a few days a while ago. Lots of scooters whizzing about, intermingled with the bikes.

Have the police given up patrolling the roads? I remember the days when you'd regularly spot someone who been pulled over by a police car. But the last few years I rarely see it (and I drive a fair bit).

Largely yes they have, to be replaced by mobile speed camera vans, in our area at least, operated by civvies. Up to 2019 I did a 500 motorway mile trip every week for 12 yrs. Over that time the decrease in police units was obvious, only to be seen en route or at an incident. Very rarely parked up in wait for a transgressor. I'm afraid that the same analogy could be used for street patrol policing on foot or by vehicle.
