Unleaded petrol - time for a change?
Is it just me, or has it become ridiculous for petrol to be called 'unleaded', when the leaded alternative hasn't been sold from forecourts for around 20 years?
Can't we just call it 'petrol' again?
Ironically, the term 'unleaded' is used most frequently to denote 'decaffeinated' when collecting orders for tea and coffee among the people I mix with.

I guess it differentiates it from "Super", but apart from a few specialist places u/l is the norm.

There is 'Super' unleaded !
I don't know any fuel stations that sell leaded fuel. If you need leaded fuel you buy unleaded and introduce a lead additive.

That's my point.
"I'm going to the unleaded station" - said no-one, ever!

You are right, it does seem to be unnecessary to term it as unleaded.
Can you imagine the problems there would be if fuel stations supplied both leaded and unleaded petrol.
There are quite a few enthusiasts who run older cars that need to run on leaded fuel but I'm assuming many of them have had the engines modified to allow them to run on unleaded.

Petrol stations did sell both leaded and unleaded petrol for a number of years, resulting in the focus on the 'unleaded' nature of petrol that persists to this day - hence my OP.
Those cars that could not be detuned to accept unleaded petrol either have to find a source of leaded petrol or bung an additive into the petrol tank when they refuel.

Apparently Algeria is the last place in the world where leaded petrol is still available.

What about India and Cuba, two countries that have large numbers of older vehicles ?

Halfway down here is a list of places still selling leaded, although I think it is out of date as I thought I knew of one in Bicester area.

Petroldirect might be worth a try - unleaded costs 60p a litre. The only worrying bit is they say it is 'delivered straight through your letterbox'
