Q5 clutch judder
I've just bought a new Q5 and find that the gearbox has what I think is called 'clutch judder' - it happens when I take my foot off the brake and pulling away.
I queried this with the garage (salesman only) who said that this was normal!
I've Googled this and it's not that uncommon, but mainly in older Audi cars.
Do i just live with this (it's not a problem) or should I insist it gets sorted while its under warranty? I'm concerned that this may becomes an expensive problem in a few years when it's out of warranty.
Thanks

Clutch judder cannot be considered normal. I'd get an independent assessment if I were you. Paying upward of £35K for a car I think I'd expect better than this.

Re: Q5 clutch judder
whats the point of a clutch?
ive had no clutch issues for 40+ years now , only drive automatics!
(except for the odd courtesy car when i forcibly reminded how appalling manuals are ) .

Re: Q5 clutch judder
Thanks for the replies.
I took it to a small independant garage that has serviced our cars for years. The boss confirmed that he felt it and it needed sorting out.
I've been to Audi and booked it in. It's getting worse and even my wife felt the judder on our way home - it ever so gently rocked the car.
I've only done 130 miles in it! I'm not mechanically minded but any problems like this only get worse as far as I can see.
It sound expensive to solve and if it's not sorted to my satisfaction I'll get someone to do a written report and send it to Audi HQ. Presumably the AA would do this, or can anyone recommend someone else?
Thanks again

It is between you and the dealer not you and Audi. They will have to sort it out for you. You in fact could reject the car outright if you are not happy.

In the early nineties I had an issue with an A4, which was then a new model. There was an electrical problem that the dealer said didn't exist and that they had never heard of before. A letter to Audi HQ in Milton Keynes (?) had them deal with the problem in no time. Interestingly the man who called to collect the car said that they had had a lot of recalls with this particular fault
I've found that if anyone at local level isn't doing their job then escalating the problem up the chain of command will resolve things sooner rather than later, and not just with cars.

It's not clear from the OP, but it might be an automatic. Most(?) modern automatics use an electronically-controlled clutch instead of the old hydraulic system.

It is - all new model Q5s are automatics.

Re: Q5 clutch judder
I am on my second automatic Q5 and have had absolutely no problems with either. If the local dealer/franchisee will not sort it to your satisfaction then get in with Audi UK in Milton Keynes. Local franchise holders are in my experience terrified of losing the franchise and will quickly sort it. As someone said, you will probably be entitled to return the car under warranty.

I like the car and would settle for the dealer to sort the problem out. They have always been OK with me, so hopefully they will be now. If there is an expensive fault it must be Audi, rather than the dealer who will bear the cost I assume?

Re: Q5 clutch judder
FredBloggs has gone totally technical on me. I have no idea what sort of transmission I have on my automatic Q5 except that it works seamlessly through apparently 8 gears (so it says on the dash) I have had not the slightest problem with automatic on any Audi I have owned (and since 1998 I have had three A6s and am now on my second Q5, all automatic) VAG is a reference to Audi/Volkswagen?
These are quality products in my book.

==============================
my understanding - could be wrong - please advise ...
there are about 3 types of automatic
1. conventional 3/4/5/6 speed auto with TQ - fluid clutch torque converter - some lock up above about 20mph .
2. CVT continuously variable - a steel belt on shifting pully's - with TQ . used in most hybrids . with lockup .
3. DSG twin dry clutches 6/7/8 speed - no TQ - as used on VAG's
my own experience has been 40 years of 1. and 2.
some problems on 1. after 100k miles on ford and renault .
zero problems on 2. upto 150k miles - nissan primera - still no auto probs - just general degeneration .
my current nissan/renault CVT does it seems have 2 internal clutches to widen the range but still has a TQ i think .
my research into the DSG type does not fill me with confidence - much too complex and negative reviews -
and less smooth than TQ types .
many of us will have no trouble with any of these - what matters is the chances of trouble arising .
i doubt that statistics are publicly available - so we have to - as ever - make a judgement .

Re: Q5 clutch judder
I am none the wiser. Maybe I can find out but I really have no interest. I bought my first A6 in 1998 I think it was and all three A6s were auto (one was a horrible underpowered diesel, but nothing to do with the transmission) and my two Q5s. The current one is a year old. For me they have all been entirely dependable in every way, never had a warranty claim or any other problem. Famous last words.
