The Koenigsegg, a car that most people have never even heard of.

The video includes an interview with the eponymous founder of the company, Christian von Koenigsegg. It's a remarkable vehicle, not just because of its power and speed but because of the genuinely advanced and radical engineering that's gone into it. Very unusually these days, especially for a low output manufacturer, the company manufactures all its own components from scratch, from the engine block to the brake pads.

I've a huge amount of respect for the man behind the company, a true engineer.

But if you're tempted to max out the credit cards you'll be disappointed - even at a starting price of around $2.1m all 80 cars have been sold.

Another company most people have not heard of is Rimac.

Their latest model, the Concept Two, has almost 2000HP using four electric motors. Figures indicate 0-60 in 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 245.

Those who watched Top Gear Two (aka The Grand Tour) will have seen the Concept One catch fire with Hammond driving.

Which brings me to a point.

I was watching a Youtube TV program about the Geneva motor show and there was a decent discussion on Tesla vs the others who are now realising electric cars are viable.

The conclusion was that while Tesla have changed the game, they are way behind on the nitty gritty details of making a car lovely, hence the delays and problems with production and it was noted some rather shoddy component for a premium car.
Other top tier manufacturers including Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW (among others) know how to make a luxury car. They don't know how to implement electric drive as well as Tesla but they might catch up fast.

All of this attention to hyper performance also seems a like mid life crisis stuff. While everyone drools over a 1 second 0-60 time and a top speed to break the sound barrier, the big market is in short haul delivery vans, and short range commuting cars.

I could live with a Nissan Leaf 95% of the time and if I had solar panels, a charging point and a powerwall I'd consider one.

Again on a practical note, I think the Hyundai Kona EV looks a winner. c£30k, practical and a 300 mile range...

With battery prices falling and range increasing, I can seriously believe that my next vehicle will be electric.

Solar panels and a powerwall won't work.......they barely produce enough power to run a house for the 6 months of autumn & winter in this country. There is very little spare energy to charge an electric car or top up a powerwall as well.

Eg......today My 14 solar panels have produced 0.772kwh of power......it's been a grey, dull day so less than 1 kilowatt of power. You won't get far in your electric car on that. Yesterday I got 4.5kwh......but all used running the house.

You will need to move somewhere sunnier than the UK if you want year round solar energy capacity for charging an electric car.

Unless they used to watch Top Gear, way back when, when as well as the Star in a Reasonably Priced car board they had the Fastest Circuit by The Stig bard and you would always notice Koenigseggeggeggegg as it stuck out of both sides of the board, near the top.

But that wouldn't be this one as I haven't watched TG for years.

Didn't the Stig crash one in 2008? With a measly 800 bhp, it was claimed to have been tested at 250 mph.
