Audi A1 35

I keep seeing a lot of Audi A1 35 TFSi cars around. "Surely they don't put a 3.5 litre engine in one of those?", I thought. And no, it seems it's a 1.5 turbo petrol.

Any idea why it's designated "35"?

Scott.

Audi standardised the engine naming across all models based on power output.

25 – 80kW (107bhp) and below
30 – 81-96kW (109-129bhp)
35 – 110-120kW (148-161bhp)
40 – 125-150kW (168-201bhp)
45 – 169-185kW (227-248bhp)
50 – 210-230kW (282-308bhp)
55 – 245-275kW (329-369bhp)

Erm, yes.

I only learned a couple of days ago that the Lexus 400h has a 3.3 litre V6. for some unknown reason I'd always assumed it have a 4.0 V8

If you're in the mood to really confuse yourself, try working out how Intel labels it's processors, I completely lost track years ago through I'm sure it makes some kind of sense if you've got a crib sheet.

Seem to recall that there was a BMW 318i that had a two litre engine, or perhaps the other way round?

BMW did label according to capacity, but now they have turbos they (for a while) kept the same numbering system to show what engine the equivalent car would have had had it still had the old type of engine (ie bigger number = more power).

See here for the list of 1-series with capacity and naming where the 118 went from 1.6 to 1.5L and the 120 went from 1.8 to 2.0L (the same as the 125)
